The Olympic symbol consists of five rings in different colors. They depict the five inhabited continents, with the Americas regarded as one continent. The rings are interlocking to show that all humanity is linked with each other and the Games can bring them together. The rings are placed on a white background to further depict the universality of the Olympics. Each of the colors chosen is present in at least one national flag.

The symbol was first used in the 1920 Games in Antwerp Belgium, although it was created for the 1916 Games which were interrupted by the First World War.
