По густой жаре, по туману ли,
по горам крутым, степной скатерти
много пасынков песнь горланили,
каждый о своём, все - о матери.

Сколько было дорог исхожено!
Как иных домой страсть-мечта звала!
Так похожа была на счастье, но
ни такой души, ни того тепла.

На семи ветрах злого города,
разрубив рукой синь прохладную,
признавались, как было дорого
то, что в даль ушло безвозвратную.

Где от той беды одолень-трава?
Словно силы все поистратили. 
И сказал один: мать моя жива,
но в чужой земле, как без матери!
