"If you could keep only one memory what would it be?"

That moment, when after a night of talking, dancing and painting I was going to have a cigarette, you said you would join me in a minute
I walked across the living room, opened doors to the balcony and let the morning in
I leaned against the fence and lit a cigarette, I counted to seventeen three times, my heart skipped every fifth beat
I left the cigarette on the fence and walked back quickly across the living room and through the hall, I stopped at the kitchen doorway

You were there, sitting in the same pose as I'd left you 3 minutes ago, with legs crossed and fingers of your right hand touching your lips
I didn't dare to move, I didn't dare to make a sound
I could see it in your eyes - you were stunned, I was completely numb
I was afraid to find out I was mistaken, I was afraid to scare away the moment I realized you were the most wonderful and unique mess I'd met, I did not

You put on the classical music I'd been asking you to put on and you disappeared in it
And I saw the music in you and I saw you in that music
And then I knew I wanted all of you, I couldn't lose you to that music, I was much more important than the music and if i wasn't, oh well

I ran back to the balcony, lit another cigarette and leaned against the fence
I counted to seventeen once and leaned further, I counted to seventeen twice
I was facing the empty doorway leaning further and further, bending over the fence above Queen's Gate, above people rushing to work, above V&A Museum, above London

I dropped my cigarette and there you were, not cut in half, it wasn't the rest of you that stepped onto that balcony, it was you and you chose me
I straightened back up, you looked into my eyes and smiled
I hid behind thousand golden curls the wind was playing with
You reached your hand, calmed down the wind, the curls, you stopped all people on the streets, you touched my cheek and smiled
The world was gone, you were stunned I was completely numb
