Events began with two London-based Russian groups: Rosinka, a childrens' choir, and Shkola Znaniya which specialises in folklore kitsch. Then Slavanye - six women in red and white "peasant costumes" performed what the Russians probably call ethno-beat, followed by the Baikal ensemble from Buryatia in eastern Siberia, who ticked the national-minority box.
Mike Tishman, winner of the Russian version of Pop Idol, received the most enthusiastic welcome and proved to be a very nice boy by saying how festivals were a time for "warmth and love".
The bands Sankt Peterburg and Zemlyane confirm my suspicion that Russian rock is not for export.
