Инди-рок берет свое название от слова "независимый" (independent). Независимость рассматривается в двух аспектах: идеология сделай-это-сам (DIY = do-it-yourself) и маленькие, низкобюджетные лэйблы для выпуска музыки.
И хотя самые крупные инди-лэйблы моут использовать для дистрибуции помощь мэйджор-лэйблов, но сам процесс принятия решений остается автономным. Так, например, в инди-роке предоставляется полная свобода для исследования и эксперимента со звуком, эмоциями или лирикой, что не очень похоже на методы звукозаписывающих компаний, ориентированных на мэйнстрим, ведь тогда выгода начинает сильно зависеть от личных предпочтений человека. Инди уходит корнями в саунд и эмоциональность американского андеграунда и альтернативного рока 80-х, хотя и с некоторыми различиями, которые объясняют изменения андеграундного рока, произошедшие с тех пор.
