Blue duck were once numerous in New Zealand but their numbers have fallen dramatically in the last decades because of habitat destruction and predation of the females and chicks by stoats. These ducks live in swift-flowing rivers throughout their lives. They have a unique bill which allows them to feed on invertebrates in the water. Visit the Oparara Basin where a recovery programme started in 2002. It includes a 40km stoat trap line with over 400 tunnels and regular monitoring of the ducks
