Sharapova pulls out of Stuttgart event

Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week's Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart due to an ongoing shoulder injury.

The world number four had hoped to make her return to action at the Tier II indoor hard court tournament, which gets under way on Monday, after several weeks on the sidelines with the injury that first flared up in March.

Sharapova has not played competitively since crashing out in the third round of the US Open to Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska earlier this month.

Sharapova told official website www.mariasharapova.com: "I am very disappointed to be unable to play because my right shoulder has not yet healed. I am doing everything I can to get back into competitive playing shape and hopefully on Tour in the run-up to the Sony Ericsson Championships, but at this point I remain day to day."

The 20-year-old has now set her sights on returning to action in time to defend her titles in Linz and Zurich next month.
