What makes a person beautiful? A perfect face? A perfect body? A healthy attitude to life? A good character?
But what exactly is beauty? For centuries men — it usually was men — have tried to come up with a mathematical formula for beauty. The ancient Greeks thought the number three was the answer — a beautiful face was one that could be divided into three exactly equal parts, hairline to eyebrows, eyebrows to mouth, and finally mouth to chin.
The Victorians believed that a face with great beauty possessed the average features of all other faces. However, this has now been debunked by recent research which found that the most attractive faces have higher cheekbones, a thinner jaw and larger eyes relative to the size of the face than an average one.
Dr Alfred Linney at University College Hospital mea¬sured the faces of models and has found out that there's no such thing as the beautiful face.
Instead the features of models turn out to be just as varied as everyone else's.
"Some have teeth that stick out," he says, "others have a jutting chin. There was no one ideal of beauty that was closer to others.
A recent survey found that it's no longer just women who want to become more beautiful: men are quickly catching up. And if creams and lotions can't do the trick, both sexes are increasingly ready to submit to the surgeon's knife in search of perfection.
And what is the perfect? Every day, we're bombarded with beautiful faces. They smile at us from advertising hoardings, TV screens and magazines. Their perfect smiles, flawless cheekbones and wide eyes fuel the multt-bitlion-dollar beauty industry. The media dictates us its` beauty. But each of us has an idea of beauty.
Prove scientifically that when we recognize a face as beautiful we are actually making a judgment about the health and vitality of that individual. We interpret facial symmetry and the smoothness of the skin to mean that a person has good genes and has been free from diseases. This is a part of what we mean by “beautiful”. Studies have shown that facial symmetry is one of the best observational indicators of good genes and healthy development and that these traits are what we mean when we call someone attractive.
But studies have also shown that there are different judgments about beauty from men and women’s opinions. Younger women rather than ones women rely more on the physical attractiveness of a man. The latter incorporate such things as wealth, stability, power and faithfulness in their definition of attractive. As might be expected, females tend to place less of their criteria for beauty on physical attractiveness that do males. For males, when it comes to choosing a male, beauty is very much in their eyes.
Perfect proportions and beautiful face always make you turn your head when you see a person who has it on the street.
But in my opinion we should be grateful for what God has given us!
