Of all the things Oda has pulled on us in his manga, it's safe to assume Chopper's mere existence if proof he's off the deep end. Brilliant, but crazy, right?

Chopper is, put simply, a reindeer-human, better known as a Human Reindeer, as he was once a reindeer who ate the Hito Hito no Mi, or the Human Fruit. This means he's a Zoan-class Empowered, and one who combines the best of worlds in humanity and in reindeer... dom. By nature, this fellow believes everything he hears, even Usopp's lies, so that right there ought to tell you that he's got some credibility issues. It doesn't matter in the end, though, for two reasons. First, Chopper is a kind, gentle creature. Second, he can WHIP YOUR ASS if he wanted to. How that relates to what I just said, eh, who knows.

To return, Chopper was, from a young age, introduced to medicine through Doctor Hiruluk, and properly conditioned by Doctor Kureha. Because of that history, he's naturally garnered talent at fulfilling his dream (to "be a panacea which can cure any disease"), and is skilled at diagnosing and treating injuries ranging from simple frostbite to ridiculous full-body wounds (which he promptly wraps in bandages from his neverending stash). For all his lack of recognizing lies and falsehoods, Chopper actually knows a TON about medicine, and in fact, that led to his greatest discovery, the Rumble Ball.

Though he lacks in basic physical strength in his Beastman Form, Chopper is quite strong in Manbeast Form and retains his agility in Beast Form. That isn't the end to his bag of tricks, though, as the "Rumble" comes to bat. To summarize, the Rumble Ball distorts the brainwave patterns of the Devil's Fruit, allowing Chopper to, for a span of three minutes, utilize additional forms. When a Rumble is initiated, the "Forms" of the Devil Fruit become "Points," including Heavy (Manbeast), Brain (Beastman), Walk (Beast), and four other forms that have been introduced thus far. With the sort of versatility given by this invention, Chopper may well be the most adaptable Strawhat.

First appearing in his own, character-specific arc, the Drum Arc, Chopper came into the crew with a simple invitation from Luffy: "SHUT UP!! LET'S GO!!!" Finesse isn't Luffy's forte, as you know, so that may not come as a surprise to some readers.

Chopper's Past

What makes the measure of a man? Is it existence, or recognition? Is it actualization, or acknowledgement? What if, by some token, you aren't really a "human" at all? For one reindeer, those questions became deathly serious when a stray fruit eaten happened to be a Devil's Fruit. Cursed by the sea and thrown into a half-and-half world of human and reindeer, the beast who would one day be named as Chopper was shunned and thrown from his herd. Subsequent ventures to befriend humans met an end with gunshots and cries of "MONSTER!"

There was another misfit in Drum, too, though. They called him Hiruluk. Though in their first meeting Chopper assaulted the Quack Doctor, it was Hiruluk's kindness and devotion that assured the reindeer his peace, and when he awoke, he lay in the bed of Hiruluk's home. For some time the two remained together, and it was during this time that they bonded, becoming like a father and his son. Then, one day, Hiruluk cast Chopper from his house, going so far as to shoot at him, so that he wouldn't see the doctor die from his mortal disease.

After hearing the story of Hiruluk from a conversation with Kureha, Chopper vowed to cure his father, and through great struggle brought make an Amiudake Mushroom, which Hiruluk received cautiously. Chopper, bloody, beaten, and void one antler, asked his loved one if he could be a doctor someday, to which Hiruluk responded by embracing him and vowing that he could.

And then... He was gone. Chopper, upon learning that the Amiudake was poisonous from Doctor Kureha, rushed to the King's Castle to see his father one more time, but just as he reached the top of the Drum Rockies, there was a great explosion: Hiruluk, rather than die by the means of his son's unknowing deed, had committed suicide by a different solution. Wapol, the King of Drum at the time, mocked the doctor's death, laughing and hollering.

That was enough. Chopper burst open his bandages into hi strong Manbeast Form, and enraged, charged the Castle Gates to be restrained by the Guard Captain Dalton. Dalton, who had seen Hiruluk's sacrifice and heard his stirring last words, sent Chopper away, and confronted the King himself to stand up for the "quack doctor's" beliefs.

Waving the flag of the sakura-petaled Jolly Roger, in front of Doctor Kureha's home, Chopper made his promise: There was no disease that couldn't be cured, and he would prove it. He would become the great doctor Hiruluk had thought he would be! Kureha agreed to take him in, after having remembered Hiruluk's prompting just before his death to teach the reindeer, and so for some time Chopper was trained as a doctor by the 139-year-old Witch Doctor.

Later, of course, he would meet the Strawhat Pirates, and there he found his calling as a friend, as a doctor, and as a human.
