Appearing as a cowardly liar, "Manly" Usopp can and will stand up as a brave warrior in times of battle. As the crew's sharpshooter and fourth member of the Straw Hat Pirates, Usopp has an amazing skill with any kind of weapon in his hand. Though he's skilled with many projectile weapons, his weapon of choice remains a simple slingshot. Don't think too lightly of his slingshot -- Usopp's amazing accuracy and various hand-made bullets called "Stars" make his slingshot a weapon that poses a threat in any battle.

Adding to his list of skills, Usopp also serves as a temporary, but sufficient shipwright. As the series goes on, he repairs those damages to Going Merry that are within his ability to mend.

Before meeting Luffy and company for the first time, Usopp had formed a small pirate group of his own called the Usopp Pirate Crew. It was composed of four members: Usopp, Ninjin, Tamanegi, and Piiman. Because of his role as captain of his small pirate crew, he repeatedly labels himself as Captain Usopp in front of the enemies he encounters as a Straw Hat Pirate.

As well as his relationship with the three kids, he cares for a young woman named Kaya. She is a young girl of a large mansion who fell ill shortly after the death of her parents a few years before the story began. One day, Usopp appeared by her window and told her a story that made her smile for the first time since the death of her parents. Though his stories were always farfetched, they were the only things that kept Kaya smiling day after day. Without realizing it, Usopp's stories are filled with his dreams and have an odd habit of coming true in a sense.

Usopp's greatest pride is in his father Yasopp, a current member of the Red Hair Pirates. Realizing that Luffy has a relationship with Shanks, he sails with him in hopes of one day meeting the father he sought for as a child.

Usopp's Workshop is found in Going Merry's Lounge. Not allowing anyone to step on the platform where he works, Usopp often uses his imagination and creativity to craft interesting but useful inveitions like Nami's Clima Tact weapon.

Usopp's greatest dream is to become a brave warrior of the sea. After engaging in his first battle against Kuro and the Kuroneko Pirates, he was determined that he could fulfill his dream only if he left his village and sailed across the seas. On the same morning when Luffy departed from Syrup Village, he was invited to join them. The reason? Because they were already companions.

Usopp's Past/Story

When Usopp was young, he lived with his mother Banchina in Syrup Village. Early in his childhood, his father Yasopp left them to become a pirate, eventually joining Shank's pirate group. Time passed and Banchina became gravely ill. Young Usopp would wait by the shore to wait for his father, hoping that his return would aid his sickly mother. Realizing that the day Yasopp would come home and take his family with him wouldn't come, he began to run throughout the village and yell that the pirates were coming, believing that it might be true that day.

Each morning, the villagers listened to Usopp's lies. With tears in his eyes, Usopp continued to tell his mother various stories in hope of encouraging her to stay alive, but Banchina always knew the truth. She was very proud of her husband and son. With a smile on her face, Usopp's mother passed away on the bed before him. As he grew up, Usopp continued to shout within the village, exclaiming the arrival of pirates as he did before. He became known as the village liar.

At the age of 12, Usopp built a pirate crew that comprised of three 4 year old village boys. By telling his stories to Piiman, Ninjin and Tamanegi (who met him because of his repuation as a liar), he easily became friends with them and formed the Usopp Pirate Crew. Their daily activities included chasing animals (labelled as monsters), showing off each other's skills, and even stealing apples. Because he was their captain, the three boys were and still are very loyal to him.

When Usopp became 16, he met Kaya, who had fallen ill after the passing of both of her parents. His stories were the only things that kept her smiling and away from depression. However, because of Usopp's bad reputation, Kaya's overseers did not allow him on her estate. As he struggles to sneak into her estate to continue to tell her the stories, Luffy's pirate group (at this point consisting of just Nami and Zoro) show up to his island.
