Nami is a well skilled thief specializing in robbing pirates. She has decieved many pirates and stole there treasures from them. She decieved even Luffy and Buggy. After the defeat of Buggy, Nami joins forces with Luffy and Zoro, but she didn´t consider herself a member of Luffy´s pirate crew because she hates pirates (see her past). However, making friends with Luffy changed her view on pirates and after Arlong's defeat, she offically became part of Luffy´s crew, where she becomes the navigator. She hopes to achieve her childhood dream by sailing the seas as a Straw Hat Pirate.

Nami's Past

As a child Nami lived in Cocoyashi-village, with her foster mother Bellemere and sister Nojiko. One day, the village was invaded by the Arlong Pirates who took it over. From this day on the people of Cocoyashi-village had to pay a monthly fee for their lives to Arlong the head of the invaders. Adults paid 100.000 Beli for their lives, 50,000 Beli for children. Everybody who couldn´t pay got executed. Since Nami´s family was very poor the household could just bring up 100,000 Beli, which Bellemere used as payment for Nami and Nojiko. This was the greatest gift Bellemere gave to the two and also the last one because at the same moment Arlong executed Bellemere in front of her stepchildren because she didn´t have any money left to pay for her own life.

After finding out that Nami has extraordinary map drawing skills Arlong made her join his crew to draw maps for them. To make sure Nami cooperates with him though he killed her mother, he made a deal with her that if she could bring collect 100,000,000 Beli, everybody in Cocoyashi-village would be free. Nami agreed and became a pirate thieve since then. She only steals from pirates because she hates them so much for what Arlong did to her village. So she's been collecting treasures from pirates for 8 years to achieve this goal.
