Castle

There was a castle far away,
Protected by the winds of May.
A wise kind-hearted King ruled there.
He had a wife, who was so fair
That gardens at her entrance bloomed
Making the air around perfumed.
The birds, attracted by this scent,
Flew down to trees, and sweetly sang.
They echoed joyfully the ringing
Of golden bells from the white building,
A church, in fact, that stood nearby,
Its spears reaching for the sky.
All was well, but a traitorous hand
Murdered the ruler of that land,
And doleful was the church's ring
That mourned for the soul of the King.
The Queen fell into grieving gloom
And shut herself inside her room.
The castle lost it's sparkling fame:
The winds of cold November came.
The castle’s gates grew old with rust,
The flowers turned to piles of dust.
It carried on for twenty years,
Twenty long, sorrowful, sad years,
Until a child with soul so clear
That it was almost like a tear,
Went through the garden one bright day
To wish her sorrows far away.
That very time a passer-by,
Looked at girl’s tears and asked her, why
Were her sweet eyes so sad and blue.
She answered him: “Because of you!
I dreamt of you the other night,
You looked just like a noble Knight!
Of course, I couldn’t ever hope
To find you; but could not elope
From thoughts about you, like a dove,
That’s captured by the cage of…”
“Love!” – he cried, - “you talk of Love!
I feel the same, my gentle dove!
And now, I see, my dreams come true,
So I can say that I love you!”
They stayed together from then on,
And on one fair summer morn
The Queen observed them from her room
And saw that everlasting gloom
Was turned to light around this pair,
And sensed the fading of despair.
She asked the lovers to come in
And soon announced them King and Queen.
The castle was brought back to life
By the new wise King and his wife:
The kindness of the loving hearts
Returned the beauty of the stars.
