Attn of Deputy Inspector Anthony V. Bologna

NYPD (Manhattan)
1st Precinct
16 Ericsson Place,
New York,
NY, 10013
USA

Dear Mr Bologna,

On June 28, 2008 a Russian Kazakh-born model Ruslana Korshunova (02.07.1987) was found dead outside her apartment block in Water Street, Manhattan's Financial District. Soon enough the NYPD ruled her death an apparent suicide in which the girl leapt from her balcony on the 9th floor of the building. The Media reported that the following facts supported the suicide version:
1) Police reported no sign of a struggle inside Miss Korshunova's apartment;
2) According to post-mortem examination, Ruslana died from blunt impact injuries one can only get in falling from a height;
3) No traces of alien skin or DNA cells were found underneath Ruslana’s nails.
At present the case has been filed up, and it is rumoured that Valentina Korshunova (mother of the deceased model) has been denied a further investigation.
Ruslana’s death sent waves of shock and grief not only through NY but through all of Russia and Kazakhstan alike. People are grieving in an attempt to understand the causes of the alleged death-plunge, and many refuse to accept ‘the first and only’ version of the Manhattan tragedy, especially in the light of some striking facts, apparently overlooked in the first place, that seem to cry against her death being a suicide.
Hence, we are writing you in order to ask to re-consider the whole case, based on the information below, and to take further action:
1. The architectural features of the apartment block where Ruslana used to live, namely – a jetty at the seventh-floor level and a wide big marquee, situated right below Ruslana’s balcony, make it impossible for the body to reach the ground. Yet the body was found on the ground, at a considerable distance from the building: approximately 12-15 meters, judging by photo and video shoots from the scene. We don’t believe it possible at all that a girl should ‘fall’ so far by simply leaping from her balcony.

2. Most, if not all, of Ruslana’s friends and loved ones had not noticed anything strange about her behaviour that could suggest her intention to commit suicide. Ruslana had not been suicidal in the past, neither had she had any reasons for killing herself. Some people are known to have talked with Ruslana a few hours before she died, but none had detected any signs of sadness or depression. One of Korshunova’s model friends, Kira Teteneva, revealed in an interview to New York Post that she had been on the phone with Ruslana not long before her death and that she had been absolutely fine. ‘She couldn’t have killed herself, she loved life so much’. “She came in this morning, she smiled, no sense of depression,” Mahmoud Nakeeb, the doorman at her 12-storey building said. “She was a very sweet girl, always smiling, never depressed-looking.”

3. Statements by some eye-witnesses of the tragedy have also proved yet another reason for doubt. A worker for the local electrical company told New York Post: 'I heard what sounded like a gunshot or a bomb or an explosion.’
Later on the press launched a series of publications in which a slightly different version (also mentioned in the police report) of what might have happened in Water Street was revealed. This time Ruslana was said to have leapt not from the balcony of her flat but from the next door building that had been under construction, just inches away from her apartment block. Following this line of thought, she ripped the construction netting covering her balcony, climbed over it onto the construction site, went up three stories more, took run and jumped.

We tend to think that this version must have been an afterthought; otherwise, there would have been official contradictions by the police of the numerous press publications referring to sources within it stating it was her balcony that Ruslana fell off. This sudden change in thinking does, in fact, suggest that the tragedy scene had not been examined properly in the first place. It also means that the later version was provided in order to give the public a more logical and probable account of the events taken place, which is, in itself, a reason to doubt it even more.
From our perspective, the later version in question carries no more face of probability then the original one for the following reasons:
1. Ruslana was acrophobic; she would have hardly chosen to climb over the side of her balcony onto the neighbouring construction site, while having to do so many potentially dangerous moves.

2. She was a highly responsible person, responsible for her near and dear ones; the bread-winner of the family, she would regularly send money to her mother back in Kazakhstan. It is questionable that Ruslana should have prepared her suicide and that it should be such a complicated multi-action plan. This couldn’t have been Ruslana’s way, taking into account how much she had cared for her mother’s financial and emotional well-being.

3. We would also like to draw your attention to the statement by another doorman, the one that took over Makhmud Nakeeb on that Saturday morning. According to his words, Ruslana left the building at around 10 a.m. and nobody saw her return. We believe that this fact must not be ignored unless it has been accounted for or there is proof that she did return home after all.

The details above provide a solid ground for doubt as to whether Ruslana Korshunova’s death was indeed an act of suicide. And that is precisely why we are writing this letter.
It is also worth mentioning that the death of one of the most successful international models, ‘the next big thing’, ‘the Russian Rapunzel’, resonated in the hearts of millions and millions around the world. Strangers before, many people became united in grief, irregardless of their ethnicity, nationality or confession. They have come together to share this pain, to seek justice, to fight for it. Besides that, let us remember that Ruslana was still a kid; under the American law, she had not yet come of age. And it is a duty of any democracy to put even stronger protection on the rights and interests of the under aged; therefore, Ruslana’s apparent unnatural death should not have been so easily attached to an act of suicide. And Ruslana’s mother, in turn, has the right to know what really happened to her daughter, and the truth can only be revealed in an impartial, full-fledged and thorough investigation.
Once again, it was a blow for all to learn that Ruslana’s family and near ones have been denied an supplementary investigation. How can we then be sure of the safety of our rights? Everybody likes to know that he or she will be protected by the state no matter what nationality they are – as it has been envisaged by the standards of international law.
We the undersigned are asking you to provide us with a solid evidence of Ruslana Korshunova’s suicide, if it had ever taken place. If no such evidence is provided, we insist that the NYPD take further action including re-opening the case with a view to get all facts straight.
There are a lot of versions of Ruslana Korshunova’s death, an intentional homicide not excluded. We don’t insist the police concentrate on a particular one, but we do hope you will consider all versions possible.

The undersigned
