When Ryan Ross and Jon Walker broke away from Panic! at the Disco last summer they quickly formed The Young Veins, a throw back rock band that wasted no time putting a line-up together and completing their debut album Take a Vacation!. I got to talk with singer/guitarist Ryan Ross, bass player Andy Soukal, and drummer Nick Murray before their sold out Chicago show at the Beat Kitchen about the Panic! rumors, their new album, a summer tour around Bonnaroo and much more.
"It really feels like we are up there trying to win people over, it is challenging" Ryan Ross stated about starting over with his new band The Young Veins. When Ryan Ross and Jon Walker walked away from their popular band Panic! at the Disco, they also thought former members Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith were walking away from the name as well. "I didn't think that they would keep the name" Ryan explained,
"It was a little bit shocking when I heard about them doing these tours and stuff without us. I figured doing your own thing meant doing your own thing."
After breaking away from Panic! Ryan Ross received a lot of backlash from fans, which is something that surprised him. "It was already bad enough without that having to happen too," Ryan explains, "I guess when people don't understand the reasons why it's easy to get mad at the person you don't know for something you think they did. It's weird how some of the fans took it personally. I wish they would understand this is our life and we have to do what is best for us." The storm is passing and over time fans have come to realize the band really did part ways because of creative differences. "Some people are coming around and saying, maybe it wasn't the smartest train of thought I was on a couple of months ago. I don't know, I mean obviously if I was a young kid, a teenager and my favorite band broke up I would be a little bit upset too" Ryan said.
The Young Veins are set to release their debut album Take a Vacation! on June 8th and half the album are songs Ross originally wrote for the next Panic! album before their break-up. When I asked when he noticed a shift in his musical styling Ryan had this to say, "It wasn't a shift really except for when we quit I guess it allowed us to do even more than we wanted. Maybe half this stuff we actually already knew there would be no chance it would be for Panic! so we went wild with it. It wasn't a conscious shift ever in our songwriting, it just kept evolving." The band has been finalizing ideas for the album release which includes, if you purchase the vinyl you get the CD for free and pre-ordering the album will also be available. "We are doing these really neat pre-order packages where we are doing these view master things from when you were a kid. We are doing a box set thing where you get one of those with pictures of the band and we did a couple of photo shoots for them" Ryan explained. The bands label One Haven Music has allowed the boys to run with their ideas. "We really liked the idea of having a view master," Nick Murray said, "we just didn't think it was a possibility." Ryan goes on to add, "The label has been really great about letting us do these crazy things already."
Currently The Young Veins are on their first tour as a band supporting Foxy Shazam and the venues are far more quaint and intimate than Ross and Walker were used to playing. "It is more interesting every night, you never know what you are going to walk into." Ryan explains, "I question the craftsmanship in a lot of these clubs because I can't figure out what they were thinking but it makes it a lot of fun. Being so close to the crowd again, I forgot how that was and it makes the show have more energy I think." When a band goes on tour it is usually in support of an album, EP, something but The Young Veins embarked on this tour with nothing more than two songs people can stream for free on-line. "Especially since we don't have any music out or released we are building a really close relationship with what fan-base we do have is really important" Nick Murray explained, "Being as close as possible, building friendships and meeting people around the country is good." The boys have received positive feedback from fans and have even won over some skeptical Panic! fans, "It has been cool to have kids say, I wasn't sure if I was going to like this or not, I've only heard two songs but I'm really excited about the album now" Ryan goes on to joke, "Then sometimes they ask if they can marry me." When the Foxy Shazam tour ends the boys are planning to do a summer tour based around their already confirmed Bonnaroo date.
Their upcoming debut album has eleven tracks, and all the songs are under three minutes long which could pose a problem when they headline a tour. "I guess something switched in Jon and my songwriting and I guess we just trimmed the fat and cut out parts we didn't need" Ryan explained, "It is going to kind of make it hard to do a headlining tour. It wasn't a conscious thing it is just the style of music we write is shorter I don't know for what reason." Do not expect the band to perform any Panic! songs to fill the time, "It is a different style so it kind of clashes a little bit" Andy Soukal explained, "I am not super familiar with everything but if there are a couple of songs similar to our style sure it would be considered but otherwise it would just clash with what we are doing." Members of The Young Veins make sure to be accessible to fans before and after their shows because they enjoy hearing what fans have to tell them. "The best feeling in the world is to have people that did not come for our band and like our band and tell us that after the show" Nick Murray says, "especially since no one has any pretense of what to expect. If they did like it that is a really good feeling, it is the best feeling in the world."
The Young Veins throw back sound can be attributed to their taste in music which includes The Kinks, The Cramps, and The Cookies. One song that bass player Andy Soukal will never get sick of hearing is “Wounded” by The Cookies. "No one is going to know what that is so you don't have to write that down, but I am going to throw that out there" Andy further explained, "it's an old song and it's just really unique and cleaver. The vocal melody are just so challenging, and that stuff in today's music is not accessible at all. You don't find stuff like that." On the bands Myspace page you can stream their current single "Change" and "Young Veins (Die Tonight)", both songs combined have received over 100,000 plays in only a month which is not bad for a band trying to win people over.
