Green Gas in Glass Bottles
I got lucky. The narcosis brought on by extending last night's show til 3pm today gave way briefly at seven pm, just enough to realize that the sun had gone down since I'd passed out. I'd have been a total wreck if I hadn't gotten up and worse, would have missed the dinner and movie. I really enjoyed Factory Girl.
Tulsa was a wonderful close to the tour. Many familiar faces in the crowd made me feel at home and a quite talented hxc kid gave one of the old songs new life after a headwalk straight outta the early nineties. Having the Dear and Departed with us also helped with keeping a bit of home on the road and SOIA's presence couldn't have been more appreciated in every way. I do miss seeing every one of them so. They are dear friends and it's always a comfort to be surrounded by genuine people making genuine music. It's nice to be reassured that some still exist.
A few things.. firstly Memphis. I don't remember the last time I was in Memphis but my standard memory of the city includes banana cream pie and Mark, Geoff, Adam and I doing a Four Dollar Four version of the Million Dollar Quartet in Sun. However this time it was a bit different. I spent most of the freezing day downtown which was an experience not too dissimilar to having crawled out of an underground bunker after the big one leveled civilization. The place was desolate, ghostly. Most businesses were closed in the middle of the day and only a few straggling bipeds were making their way from nowhere to nowhere else. We saw Dream Girls (which was absolutely fabulous - Beyonce was so angelic it made me want to take poison.) The theatre held 25 screens. We were the only three people there. When RJ asked the nice young man supplying me with soy coco if there was some special event that had drawn the entire population elsewhere he responded "Nope. Welcome to Memphis." Who'd have thought?
Secondly...Springfield. The cab ride to the mall made me feel like I had taken the wrong rabbit hole. I swear, it felt like I was crossing styx and the retribution for my lives indulgences were just beginning with the ride that would trap me in some bizarro world where...things like this were said....these are quotes, and may I point out that the gentlemen who said them was seemingly very nice and entirely serious: " That used to be a Dillards, but now it's new...something called Macys I think." " In the center of the mall there's a place where there's all sorts of restaurants. People sit around at tables and eat. It's called a food court.," and my personal favorite based on it's flavor " There's a big restaurant over there. It serves italian food and called the Olive Garden." If none of this blows your mind I revel in your detachment. Cheers.
When leaving said mall we met two nice gentlemen who drove us to our hotel - John and Brandon. Though they were listening to something rather painful on the way, the car did have a nice back to the future vibe and the gentlemen were great company. Once they left us we regretted not asking them to show us the Springfield nightlife or simply let us sit in their back seat while we stared at the flux capacitor and they told stories. If you're reading this boys, I'm sorry about the guest list. Smith tells me the lady at the door was less than competent. You were both on it. Thanks again for the lift.
This is already way too long. Thank you so much to everyone who made this run such a good time. I'm going back to sleep.
Fritch tells me matches aren't vegetarian. I never knew. I liked matches.
