Legends say that Gwendal was outcast from the Land of Dragons and lived not far away from early Celtic settlements.
Long ago dragons were at war with Celtic tribes who lived in the Valley of Three Rivers – the area at the foot of Dragons’ Rocks, where the dragons had been settling since the Creation. Once, during the All-Clans Meeting, where the heads of dragon clans discussed the war issues, Gwendal clamoured against the war with people of the Valley of Three Rivers and brought up an idea of uniting with them to stand against their common enemies – the savage tribes for the Far Lakes. But the Meeting decided to exile Gwendal as a traitor and forbade him to live in the Dragons’ Rocks for ever. Since then Gwendal lived on the boarder of the Valley of Three Rivers and helped people to fight the murderous Far Lakes tribes.
Dragons can be found in almost all religions and cultures around the world where they often held major spiritual significance. In many Asian cultures dragons are still revered as representative of the primal forces of nature, religion and the universe. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power, and are often associated with wells, rain, and rivers. In some cultures, they are also said to talk like humans, be wiser and live longer. The persistence of the dragon is a proof that it is not only a popular monster but also a true archetype.
The image of a dragon with a sword has been widely known from the Middle Ages. Probably, its martial spirit appealed to aristocracy, especially those participating in spear-running.
