Name notes: Noel's name is written in phonetic katakana characters, which spell out "No-e-lu." This is the Japanicization of the French name "Noel." Now, I was taught that "Noel" is a boy's name in French, whereas "Noelle" is a girl's name... However, on official merchandise (such as these sticker cards), as well as in volume 05 of the manga, Noel's name is written as N-O-E-L. I have also heard that in Canada at least, "Noel" can be used as a girl's name.

I know that in the anime fansubs, her name is written as "Nuil," but I don't understand the basis for that. Noel's name is written with the same characters in both the anime and the manga.

Noel has not yet been given an official profile.

Noel

Noel is the princess of the Arctic Ocean. Using her pearl, she can transform into Deep Blue Pearl Voice. Within the manga, Noel has not yet appeared in a normal human form.

Noel is actually Caren's twin sister (the slightly elder twin, to be exact). Noel and Caren were born at the same time and at the same moment, even though they were born at opposite poles of the Earth.

At the beginning of the manga, Noel had managed to escape her destroyed kingdom, and had finally found another fleeing mermaid princess, Rina. Noel and Rina vowed to search for the remaining mermaid princesses, but at that moment, Gakuto and Yuuri caught up with them. Noel sacrificed herself so that Rina could escape. Rina is still haunted with the memory of her last moments with Noel; and Noel, for her part, spends the majority of the manga sleeping within Gakuto's castle.

Despite the fact that she is Caren's twin sister, Noel seems to be the polar opposite (no pun intended) of Caren in many ways. Noel has a very calm, gentle, caring personality. Rather than leaping into action, Noel instead pauses and reflects before making a decision. The only thing that Noel does impulsively, however, is jump into harm's way if that's what it takes to protect her loved ones. Noel sacrifices herself to Gakuto twice in the manga, the first time for Rina, and the second time for Caren. Noel's courage, and capacity for self-sacrifice, are the personality traits that she actually shares in common with Caren.

Noel does not appear as a mermaid princess. Deep Blue Pearl Voice only has one outfit in the manga, and has received no power-ups. However, her one and only idol outfit is indeed analogous with the "second" idol outfits of the other mermaid princesses; it has double-layered gloves, boots, and ruffles.

Caren

Caren is the Princess of the Antarctic Ocean. Using her Purple Pearl, she can transform into Purple Pearl Voice. Caren is actually Noel's twin sister (the slightly younger twin, to be exact). Noel and Caren were born at the same time and at the same moment, even though they were born at opposite poles of the Earth. Despite the fact that they consider themselves to be twins, however, they have never actually met each other face-to-face. Still, Caren obviously cares a great deal about Noel. When she hears that Noel has been captured by Gakuto, Caren vows to rescue her, no matter what.

Caren is a difficult character to understand. She first appears in chapter 09, in her human form, essentially stalking Lucia and company. She also seems to have a mysterious interest in Mitsuki-sensei.

At first, even though Caren will not fully reveal herself to the other three mermaids, she still appears willing to help them out from afar. In chapter 10, she appears in her mermaid form to return Lucia's microphone to her (it had been knocked out of her hand by one of Izuuru's attacks). And in chapter 11, by acting as a self-described "pest," she interferes in time to prevent Lucia from revealing her true identity to Kaito. Caren may look like she has ill intentions at the end of that chapter, but actually, she may have been protecting Lucia. It wouldn't do anyone any good if Lucia turned into foam.

In the end, however, when Caren finally does reveal herself as Purple Pearl Voice, she also finally states that she has no intention of becoming friends with the other mermaids. She blames them (especially Rina) for Noel's capture. "I can't believe in any of you," she tells them. And she intends to rescue Noel by herself. Unfortunately, however, things don't exactly work out the way that Caren had planned...

Finally, in chapter 19, Caren reveals the double-layered gloves and boots that signify her power-up outfit. PS: Sorry that Caren looks a little bloody and beat-up in this scan.
