The South Amana General store in Iowa’s historic Amana Colonies is home to Fern Hill, an 18-year-old shop that carries architectural antiques, fabrics and a diverse collection of handmade quilts, both vintage—among them a rare 1858 star-pattern quilt—and new. Iowa city artist Erick Wolfmeyer’s original designs (above) evoke contemporary imagery. His Home Sweet Home is a pieced quilt that suggests an Escher-esque aerial view of suburban houses and swimming pools. (June 2006)

Interior designer Michael S. Smith and architect Oscar Shamamian, of Ferguson & Shamamian, collaborated on a 4,500-square-foot Shingle Style house on Martha’s Vineyard. Above: In a guest room, Colonial American elements, including the lunette window and beadboard walls and ceiling, are complemented by furnishings such as the four-poster bed and the Windsor chair. Above the headboard is a fan carving, from Sotheby’s. (June 2006)

Margaret McCurry created a family retreat in southwestern Michigan for Joan and Irving Harris that is “practical as well as aesthetically pleasing and contextual,” says the architect. Above: The master bedroom. “Twelve-foot-high ceilings and French doors, which open to terraces, bring a sense of spaciousness into the room,” says McCurry. The covered baskets are African. “In response to the architecture, I favored furnishings with a strong geometry,” Leslie Jones says of the interiors she designed for a family’s retreat on Lake Michigan. Above: “The challenge in the small master bedroom was to include a king-size bed as well as a seating area,” Jones says. Architect Kathryn Quinn designed a window seat that also provides storage and exposed the sloped roofline to amplify the space. (June 1999)

In Wyoming, architect Paul Bertelli drew on the barn vernacular in designing an artists’s studio. Above: Lined with white-washed barn siding, the sleeping loft is simply furnished. (June 2001)
