| Police Break Up Immigration Protest Clash In Flatiron |
|
| June 24, 2006 Police had to be called in to break up a noisy protest over immigration in front of Revolution Books on West 19th Street Friday night. Members of a group called New York Immigration Control and Enforcement called on supporters of illegal immigrants to “come out of the shadows." They were greeted by a group of immigrant rights’ supporters. "Immigrants are actually workers and enrich this country, and they're just a racist group," said one protester. “A lot of these folks, their ancestors came here illegally. Now they want to kick folks out who are trying to make a better life here," said another. "Anybody from any country, white, green, brown, or yellow, if you're here illegally you should not be allowed to have citizenship," added another. "When you go by 26 Federal Plaza and you see hundreds of people on line trying to do it legally; it is the height of ludicrocity to even consider legalizing 12 million people," added a fourth. New York ICE says it decided to rally in front of Revolution Books because it believes the store promotes socialist views. The store's management fired back, saying it supports immigrants’ rights. |
