Ура-ура! Справедливость торжествует и голладская конькобежка забирает золото на 1000м! Я говорил, что она ещё всем покажет!
Marianne Timmer from the Netherlands clinched a surprise gold medal in the women's 1,000 metres at the Turin Olympics on Sunday - eight years after her first Olympic success. Timmer, who was disqualified from the 500m earlier this week, won double Gold in the 1500m and 1000m at Nagano in 1998.
Her coach Jac Orie had promised she would try for gold in the 1,000 metres.
"This gave me extra motivation," a glowing Timmer told reporters. "I am still angry at this. We were here for a week, your adrenaline is flowing, the moment you really wanted is here and then this," she said of her disqualification."
Timmer's time of 1:16.05 was enough to give her the top spot, 0.04 ahead of Canadian athlete of the year Cindy Klassen and 0.06 clear of Anni Friesinger of Germany, the bronze winner.
Klassen became the first Canadian woman to win three medals at a Winter Olympics. She won silver in the team pursuit and bronze in the 3,000 metres.
DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Timmer, 31, briefly married to her then coach and former Olympic champion Peter Mueller, struck out at the 2002 Olympics, finishing eighth in the 500 metres, fourth in the 1,000 metres and 21st in the 1,500 metres.
With her career seemingly going downhill after Salt Lake City, Timmer hooked up with Orie who also coaches Dutch 1,000 metre bronze medallist Erben Wennemars.
"I always knew, even in Salt Lake that I could skate with the best," Timmer said.
Asked how she could still come back and win gold after eight years, Timmer joked: "It's because of the fact that I still look so young.
"But it was incredible then and it is incredible now. How I did it I don't know but I did," she said.
Dutch and German fans, sitting together in the stands, were on the edge of their seats until the final pair of Friesinger and Sabine Voelker, but sang and cheered seconds after the medals were decided.
Timmer walked a victory lap, saluting the Dutch who stood up and threw flowers, before being handed a phone in the centre of the oval.
"It was (Jan Pieter) Balkenende," she said, referring to the Dutch Prime Minister. "He said congratulations and regards to my family."
