Kinds of sport

Sport is an essential part of life-style of everybody, who wants to be fit, feel good, look slim and stay young. Nowadays there are a lot of different kinds of sports. Every nation has its own favorite kinds of sport.
As for British, they are keen on a sort of football, called rugby. It is their national sport. Golf, cricket, table tennis, lawn tennis, racing, darts and some others are also British national sports. By the way, Englishmen like all kinds of racing. Horseracing, motorcar racing, boat racing dog racing and even donkey racing are very popular in England.
Russians are fond of football. In most of sport program it has the first rank. Although Russia isn’t a world’s football leader, a lot of teenagers believe that some day we will become champions in this kind of sport. A group of sport activities, which has appeared not long ago, is also popular among Russians. Extreme sports are very dangerous and quite expensive, but still many teenagers go in for it. They like to feel adrenaline rush in their body and they say that they won’t change their sport preferences. Some countries have some problems with winter sports, since in those countries climate isn’t cold enough. In Russia there are no problems with that. That is why all winter sports are developed here.
Such sports as hockey, soccer, weightlifting, track and field, tennis, rowing, wrestling, golf, basketball, volleyball, boxing, figure skating, cross-country, skiing, swimming, judo and shooting are popular in USA. The variety and size of the country, its different climates and the people’s love of competitions of any type can explain the large choice of sports in America. The most recent unusual that first reached popularity in the USA is triathlon. It includes swimming, bicycle racing and long-distance running and is becoming more and more popular in Europe.
Every country has it’s own special kinds of sport and they all are united in the world of sport, which is a part of our life.

Many sports were invented in Great Britain and then spread throughout the world. That is why many of them have English names: basket-корзина, ball- мяч; foot- ступня, ball-….
Badminton was called after the place where this game was first played.
The national British sports are football and cricket however other kinds of sport are wide spread there too. People are interested in golf, tennis, racing, darts, rugby, squash (игра в мяч вроде тенниса) badminton, canoeing, soccer, snooker (бильярд),bowling(кегельбан), yachting, boxing, hockey and what not. Many of these kinds of sport originated in Britain.
They say that when the English neither playing nor watching games, they like to talk about them.
One of the most spectacular (зрелищный) kinds of sport is football. It was invented by Englishmen.
It is played with feet and head only but the goalkeeper can take the ball with his hands. This team game is very popular in Russia too. In the USA, however, football is called soccer. American football has nothing in common with soccer. The player can run with a ball, touch and push each other. This game is played with an oval ball and the players wear helmets because the game is very dangerous. In fact football is also one of the most participant sports (массовый). There are professional and amateur (любитель) teams which compete at different levels.(соревноваться на разных уровнях) Professional sport is a big business and famous sportsmen can make a lot of money. Amateur sport is for recreation (развлечение) it’s good fun. CUP FINAL is one of the biggest events (соревнование, событие) of the year.
Cricket is a traditional British game. It is played in summer. It is a very long and slow game and is played with a ball and a bat by two teams which consist of 11 men. A match can take 5 days and end in draw.
(закончиться вничью) When the English say: ”That’s no cricket” it means “that’s not fair” (справедливо) as to play this game means to be fair. Foreigners can’t understand this game; it seems slow and boring however most Englishmen think it is exciting.
Rugby( something like American football) is played by teams of 15 men with an oval ball. The players can carry the ball with their hands. It is more participatory than spectator kind of sport. It is a violent game ( игра с применением грубой физической силы)
There are 2 kinds of tennis: lawn tennis(большой) and table tennis.They don’t have much in common.

The most famous is boat racing between Oxford and Cambridge. A lot of people come to watch the competition and risk their money. Gambling (азартная игра на деньги) is the main purpose, there is very little sport in some races.
Americans are keen on many different kinds of sports like baseball, hockey, basketball, archery(стрельба из лука), track-and-field(лёгкая атлетика), wrestling, rowing(гребля), hang-gliding ( дельтапланеризм) and some others. They like to compete. Some unusual kinds of sports originated in the USA like wind-surfing and skate-boarding.
Different kinds of sports attract millions of sportsmen and spectators in Russia. Weightlifting, figure-skating, shooting, skiing, swimming, diving (ныряние), sailing (парусный спорт), water skiing, tobogganing ( санный)), hunting(охота) and many others are popular in our country. There are many well-equipped gyms(хорошо оборудованные спортзалы) and sport facilities(оборудование) in every city. Our professionals take part in World Championships and often win gold medals.
I think that sport is a way of teaching social values(ценности) like teamwork(взаимодействие) and sportsmanship(спортивный дух). It is an ideal to be intelligent and good at sports. Moreover life is a race for success. So people must compete with others. Learning how to win in sports they develop the habits(привычка) necessary to compete successfully in life. Besides sport unites.
I am hooked on(люблю) break dancing. I can’t say that my parents share(разделяют) my interest but my friends do. I think it is the best way to combine pleasure and fitness. It’s good for muscles and lungs(лёгкие). It improves(улучшать) self-control and coordination.
