I was somehwat surprised to receive from you a Referee Report Form in
relation to an application for entry to our MA in Jewish Studies at
Manchester, without any covering letter or prior correspondence.

I would be interested to know what has prompted you to make this
application, and whether you have any background in Jewish Studies. I
apologise if you have previously told me something about this; my memory is
unreliable and our earliest e-mail correspoindence is no longer readily
available.

This is not to discourage your application, but simply to request further
information, Have you already sent your application form to Manchester?

I am not sure that I am a suitable referee, given my overall responsibility
for this course. But I shall take advice on this.
