5,56 мм автоматическая винтовка М 27 разрабатывалась в рамках программы Infantry Automatic Rifle ("пехотная автоматическая винтовка") с целью замены 5,56 мм ручных пулеметов M249 SAW в отделениях корпуса морской пехоты, с их сохранением на уровне взвода и была принята на вооружение в КМП США в конце 2009 года.
Разработчик - немецкая компания НК.
М27 выполнена на базе немецкой автоматической винтовки HK 416 и практически ничем от неё не отличается.
Некоторые исследователи предполагают, что программа IAR затеянная КМП США была способом скрыть желание получить на вооружение новые автоматические винтовки в обход утверждённой процедуре.
Заявляется, что М27 как замена M249 SAW может комплектоваться сдвоенными барабанными магазинами на 100 патронов (от компании "Beta Co") или на 150 патронов (от компании "Armatac" ).

The M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle looks similar to an M16 rifle and is meant to be operated similarly as well. The IAR will replace the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, giving Marines a lighter, more precise weapon to use while deployed.

Kilo Company, Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).
The training focused on the squad’s ability to effectively utilize AAV-7 Amphibious Assault Vehicles and M1A1 Abrams tanks to close with and destroy enemy targets. Elements of the 15th MEU are ashore in Kuwait for sustainment training to maintain and enhance the skills they developed during their pre-deployment training period. The 15th MEU is embarked with the Essex Amphibious Ready Group and deployed to maintain regional security in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
