23 сентября 2012 года на первом китайском авианосце, перестроенном из советского авианесущего крейсера "Варяг" прошла торжественная церемония передачи судна ВМС Народно-освободительной армии Китая (НОАК).
Авианосец поименован как "Ляонин" - в честь провинции на северо-востоке Китая.
В воскресенье, как сообщает телеканал "Фэнхуан", на корабле с бортовым номером "16" был поднят государственный флаг, флаг НОАК и флаг ВМС Китая.

China sent its first aircraft carrier, refitted from a ship bought from Ukraine, into formal service on September 25 amid a tense maritime dispute with Japan, a show of naval force that could worry its neighbours.
China's Ministry of Defence said the newly named Liaoning aircraft carrier would "raise the overall operational strength of the Chinese navy" and help Beijing to "effectively protect national sovereignty, security and development interests".
