Scotland - The Atholl Highlanders

The Duke of Atholl's regiment are the only remaining private army in Europe having been granted the right to bear arms in the 1840s by Her Majesty Queen Victoria. The regiment gathers annually in May at Blair Castle in Highland Perthshire, and the parade is a popular tourist attraction - 26th/27th/28th May 2012

Europe's Last Private Army Parades in Scotland.

Soldiers from The Atholl Highlanders take part in the annual parade of Europe?s last remaining private army on May 25, 2013 in Blair Atholl, Scotland. The regiment is now in its 175th year of existence after Lord Glenlyon first took a bodyguard of men to a medieval tournament at Eglinton in Ayrshire in 1839.
Five years later, they mounted a guard for Queen Victoria's stay at Blair Castle, at which point, in 1844, exactly 100 years since Prince Charles Edward Stuart landed in Moidart, they were granted the Queen?s colours and the right to legally bear arms as a private force a unique honour that remains in place today.
