6 Regiment Army Air Corps (Volunteers) is based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Its role is to provide ground crew for Apache and Lynx helicopters as reinforcements to other Army Air Corps regiments, both on exercise and operations.
With the emergence of the Wildcat, which will replace the current Lynx helicopter, training will be targeted to encompass this new capability, and this exercise provided the reservists with the opportunity to learn about working with the new Wildcat and become familiar with its refuelling and resupply.
The Wildcat will perform a range of tasks on the battlefield including reconnaissance, transportation of troops and materiel, and the provision of force protection. It will be significantly more powerful than the current Lynx, enabling it to operate in extreme hot conditions and at high altitudes.

Полет состоялся в графстве Сомерсет на юго-западе Англии.

В общей сложности минобороны Великобритании заказало для своих ВМС 28 вертолетов Wildcat, еще 34 вертолета полагаются сухопутным войскам. Стоимость вертолетов оценивается более чем в 1,6 миллиарда фунтов стерлингов (2,5 миллиарда долларов).

На вооружение вертолеты встанут в 2015 (ВМС) и 2014 годах (СВ) и заменят устаревшие армейские вертолеты Lynx AH7/9/9A и палубные Lynx HAS3/HMA8. Кроме того, договор от 2012 года стоимостью 250 миллионов фунтов предусматривает обслуживание вертолетов Wildcat и подготовку пилотов.

"Wildcat" HMA Mark 2 внешне схож со стоящими на вооружении вертолетами Lynx, однако отличается более современными двигателями и бортовым оборудованием, а также новой кабиной пилота.
"Wildcat" развивает скорость до 296 километров в час и способен преодолевать до 777 километров. Вертолет вмещает до семи человек, а также может использоваться для перевозки грузов.

The first Wildcat Attack Helicopter to be delivered to the Royal Navy has successfully taken its first flight at Yeovil in Somerset, the MoD announced today (Monday).
Pictures show the new helicopter’s maiden flight.
The Wildcat has a more powerful engine allowing it to be flown in extreme conditions all year round.
It is also equipped with a more robust fuselage, a high tech interactive display and a new radar system that provides 360 degree surveillance.
Wildcat HMA Mk2 will carry Sting Ray torpedoes, a door-mounted 0.5 inch heavy machine gun and new light and heavy variants of the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon Missiles.
Expected to perform a range of tasks once in-service, the Maritime Wildcat Attack Helicopter will be used in anti-surface warfare, force protection and counter-piracy.
It will also be able to carry out an anti-submarine role.

PUNISHING conditions were not a problem for the Royal Navy’s newest helicopter as it was tested for the first time in the searing heat of the Gulf by a naval team from Portsmouth.

Wildcat – which will provide the aerial eyes and punch of British destroyers and frigates for a generation – spent a fortnight flying in the Middle East during key trials with the Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS Duncan.
It is the first time the new helicopter has experienced such extreme heat, with the mercury rising to 45 degrees C.

On top of this, the six-tonne aircraft had to contend with strong wind.

Both HMS Duncan’s crew and the test pilots were pleased Wildcat’s performance, with the helicopter even managing to land backwards on the flight deck as the destroyer powered through the Gulf.

HMS Duncan’s commanding officer Commander Richard Atkinson said the Wildcat trials had ‘surpassed expectations’.
