3 октября 2011 года объединенная испытательная бригада ВМС и Корпуса морской пехоты США 3 октября в 15:12 по времени восточного побережья выполнила первую вертикальную посадку опытного образца BF-2 самолета пятого поколения F-35B "Lightning II" на палубу десантного вертолетоносца LHD1 "Wasp".
Первая вертикальная посадка является частью первого этапа летно-конструкторских испытаний F-35B Lightning II, который начался 3 октября 2011 года и по плану должен занять около двух недель. Во время испытаний будет собран большой объем информации о характеристиках F-35B на режимах укороченного взлета и вертикальной посадки и о взаимодействии самолета и корабельных систем при нахождении самолета на палубе, перемещении по палубе и техническому обслуживанию в ангаре.
F-35B "Lightning II" – один из трех вариантов многофункционального истребителя пятого поколения, предназначен для Корпуса морской пехоты США и обладает способностями укороченного взлета и вертикальной посадки для использования с палубы десантных вертолетоносцев или слабо оборудованных экспедиционных авиационных баз передового развертывания.
Он должен заменить стоящие на вооружении Корпуса самолеты AV-8B Harrier и F-18 Hornet.

4 октября 2011 года опытный образец BF-2 самолета F-35B "Lightning II", выполнил первый укороченный взлет с палубы десантного корабля "Wasp".
На этом этапе программы испытаний F-35B Lightning II предстоит выполнить 67 посадок на палубу в течение двух недель. При возникновении необходимости, корабль сможет находиться в распоряжении испытателей в течение 6 месяцев.
