A Royal Air Force Sentinel R1 ASTOR surveillance aircraft at RAF Waddington.
The Sentinel aircraft provides a long-range, battlefield-intelligence, target-imaging and tracking radar for the RAF and the Army and will have surveillance applications in peacetime, wartime and in crisis operations.

An ASTOR Sentinel R1 surveillance aircraft of 5AC (Army Cooperation) Squadron.The ASTOR system (Airborne Stand-Off Radar) on the Sentinel R1 aircraft is used to gather vital information for forces in the fight against the Taleban.
These aircraft can detect and recognise moving, static and fixed targets on the ground and are capable of operating for over nine hours at a time. The information gathered is transmitted to ground stations to enable rapid tactical planning and the efficient cueing of assets.
ASTOR has been successfully used by Number 5 (AC) Squadron based at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire.
