Didn't Tolkien create actual languages? As in full fledged grammar, linguistics and etymology?

In Homer, Virgil, Dante, etc there are things called epic similes. They're used to stretch out the scene, and create a more vivid mental image for the reader. Modern writers, particularly Tolkien I would say, sometimes incorporate them into their stories as well. They're quite tricky though, and can easily be done poorly.
