Big needles doing garter stitch -- a few rows with fluffy or wired laceweight to form the background grid, then two to a few rows of something varied and bulky. If you only do one or two rows of the bulky at a time, with more of the net background prominent, it may be called "Scribble Lace"

Mitered squares are worked like a decreasing chevron, long sides to smallest point. Links to color charts & rectangular diagrams are also given.
