BEGINNER’S CHOICE, 3″, Dark
Today’s block was one presented by Laura Wheeler through the Old Chelsea Station Needlecraft Service, and also through Sioux City Journal, 1940.
Those old quilters had a sarcastic sense of humour! This is the original block:

Our version is a simplification of this:

If you’d like to make the original block, using templates, there is a 6″ version available at Jinny Beyer’s website.

THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, 3″, Dark
The House that Jack Built is an early Ladies Art Company block (#265, c. 1895), drawing its name from the 1755 English nursery rhyme, The House that Jack Built. A similar block (with more stripes in the squares) was documented by Carrie Hall in 1935; she called it House the Jack Built, without the definite article. Grandma Dexter went for a simpler name: Triple Stripe.

This is the house that Jack built.
This is the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the cat that killed the rat
That ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the judge all shaven and shorn
That married the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat

That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the rooster that crowed in the morn
That woke the judge all shaven and shorn
That married the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the farmer sowing his corn
That kept the rooster that crowed in the morn
That woke the judge all shaven and shorn
That married the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the horse and the hound and the horn
That belonged to the farmer sowing his corn
That kept the rooster that crowed in the morn
That woke the judge all shaven and shorn
That married the man all tattered and torn
That kissed the maiden all forlorn
That milked the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.

CAKE STAND, 3″, Dark
I have an entire quilt make of this cute little block. I just haven’t finished quilting it yet! Oh to have endless days …
[показать]
Cake Stand is yet another Ladies Art company block (#59, c. 1895; then documented in Hall, 1935). Over the years, it has been known by a few other names: Basket (Hearth and Home and Laura Wheeler and/or Alice Brooks, Old Chelsea Station Needlework Service) and Fruit Basket(Household Magazine, 1929).

THE ARROWHEAD, 3″, Dark
[показать]
Today’s block was first published in the Kansas City Star in 1941. The correct name for this block is The Arrowhead, with the definite article. According to Barbara Brackman’s research, em>Arrowhead refers to other blocks. Oh what a difference a ‘the’ makes!

TULIP LADY FINGERS, 3″, Dark
This is a weird little block, with a weird little name; but it has a nice centre square for a feature fabric. Tulip Lady Fingers is a Ladies Art Company block (#394, 1897; also reproduced by Hall in 1935).
