LOG CABIN ALBUM, 3″, Dark

This pattern was originally published by Comfort Magazine as Log Cabin and Album Pattern. Barbara Brackman tells us that Comfort was a “periodical published from 1888 to 1942 in Augusta, Maine by Gannet and Morse”, and that they published patterns not only in the magazine, but by mail order and booklets.

STEPPING STONES, 3″, Dark

The first name published for this block was Road to California, by the Ladies Art Company (c. 1895, #234). It was later published by Nancy Page as Stepping Stones, and this is the name I’ve used, as we have already made a Road to California on July 7, and that block is better known by that name. I don’t have an exact date for Nancy Page’s version of Stepping Stones, but her syndicated mail-order column appeared throughout the 1920s – 1940s.

This block also received the moniker, Crossroads from Needlecraft Supply in 1938.

CAROL’S SCRAP TIME QUILT, 3″, Dark

This block is a relatively new one! It was published in Little ‘n Big in October 1964 (one of only a few dozen issues published between February, 1964 and March, 1966). Enjoy choosing a feature fabric for the centre square.

TOAD IN A PUDDLE, 3″, Dark

Wow. Another month complete. Pat yourself on the back for getting this far!

Today, another beautiful block from the Ladies Art Company, this one was in the original set (#150) in print in 1895 (perhaps earlier). The Ladies Art Company called it Toad in a Puddle, but when Carrie Hall made it in 1935, she called it Toad-in-a-Puddle (with hyphens). I love how this block really is reminiscent of it’s name, I can almost see the ripples in the puddle.

You’ve heard of the recipe called Toad in a Puddle or Frog in the Pond? Just set chocolate frogs in green jelly in little plastic cups. A simple Aussie staple for kid’s parties.

SQUARES WITHIN SQUARES, 3″, Dark

An easy block today, to give you some breathing space to complete yesterday’s floral corner.

This pattern was originally published as The Squares within Squares, by Nancy Cabot, in the Chicago Tribune in 1936 (although hers was entirely made of squares).

ROADS TO BERLIN, 3″, Dark

Today is German Unity Day (Tag der Deutschen Einheit)! It celebrates the anniversary of German reunification in 1990, and the bringing down of the Berlin wall that year. Wishing a wonderful holiday to our German quilters!

So what better block for today than Roads to BerlinRoads to Berlin is the name given to this block in 1944 in the Kansas City Star. It is also known as Box Quilt (Ladies Art Company, 1897, #351 and Hall, 1935), Box Car Quilt (Nancy Cabot) and The Open Box (Alice Gammel, 1973). Both Hall (1935) and Grandmother Clark (1930s) called it Eccentric Star, while the Kansas City Star published the same block as Contrary Husband in 1938. Other names are Churn Dasher(Hall, 1935) and Open Book (Needlecraft Supply, 1930s).
