Otto Day Cardigan (Knitting Pattern!)

I made a sweet little short sleeve sweater (Quince & Co. Osprey, color parsley) that was oh so sweet! But he grew out of it in a minute. So I knit up another in Cascade's Eco Wool.... it's quite lovely, easy to get on and comfy, and keeps those hands free for all the trouble my wee one gets into all these days.










Double Breasted Baby Sweater
Sizes: 3 months, (6m, 12m, 18m, 24m)

Finished Size: at chest, aprox. 21 (22, 23, 24, 25) inches

Gauge: 4 stitches per inch in double seed stitch

Yarn: Quince & Company Osprey (or Cascade Yarns Eco Wool)

Needles: Size 8 circular 16" or straight needle, and size 8 double pointed needles (or size needed to obtain guage)

Notions: 1" button OR sew in snap OR toggle


Stitches you will need to know how to knit:
Double seed stitch:
Rows 1 & 2: K1, P1 on right sides and P1, K1 on wrong sides
Row 3 & 4: P1, K1 on right sides and K1, P1 on wrong sides

Honeycomb Cable: (8 stitches in cable)
Rows 1-4: Knit on right sides and purl on wrong sides
Row 5: Place 2 stitches on cable needle, hold to front, knit next 2 stitches, knit 2 from cable needle. Place next 2 stitches on cable needle and hold to back. Knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle.
Rows 6-8: Knit on right sides and purl on wrong sides.
Row 9: Place 2 stitches on cable needle and hold to back. Knit 2, then knit 2 from cable needle. Place 2 stitches on cable needle, hold to front, knit next 2 stitches, knit 2 from cable needle.

Stockinette stitch: Knit on right sides and purl on wrong sides


Sleeves
On double pointed needles, cast on 24 (26, 28, 30, 32) stitches. Join and place marker at beginning of row. In double seed stitch, work in the round for 10 rows. Change to stockinette stitch and work for 4 more rows.

Row 15: Cast off 10 (10, 12, 12, 14) stitches. Place remaining stitches on stitch holder.


Body
Cast on 94 (98, 102, 106, 110) stitches, using circular or straight needles.

Row 1 (right side): work in double seed stitch for 10 stitches, k8 (cable stitches), double seed for 25 (26, 29, 31, 33) stitches, k8 (cable stitches), double seed for 25 (26, 29, 31, 33) stitches, k8 (cable stitches), double seed for, 10 stitches

Rows 2-9: continue in pattern. (Rows 5 & 9: Work cable.)

Work in pattern, until piece measures 5 (6, 6.5, 7, 7.5) inches.



Work 18 (19, 19, 20, 20) stitches, cast off 10 (10, 12, 12, 14) stitches. Work 38 (40, 40, 42, 42) stitches, cast off 10 (10, 12, 12, 14)) stitches, work 18 (19, 19, 20, 20) stitches.




Joining
Join Body and Sleeves together: Working in pattern, work 18 (19, 19, 20, 20) stitches, place marker, knit held sleeve stitches, place marker, work 38 (40, 40, 42, 42) stitches, place marker, knit held sleeve stitches of second sleeve, place marker, work 18 (19, 19, 20, 20) stitches.



All remaining right side rows: continue in pattern (sleeve stitches between markers continue to be knit in stockinette stitch), before each marker, k2tog, after each marker k2tog through back loop.


Wrong side rows: work in pattern.


At the same time, complete row 9 of front side cables. For remaining rows, front side cables are knit in double seed stitch pattern. Back cable continues in honeycomb cable pattern.

Continue until piece measures 6.5 (7.5, 8, 8.5, 9) inches. Create button hole (or omit this and use a sew-in snap or toggle): on next wrong side row, knit until 7 stitches remain. Cast off 4 stitches. Knit until end. On next row knit 3, cast on 4 stitches, and continue until end of row.

Work in pattern for 4 more rows. Cast off all stitches.


Finishing
Sew underarms closed. Sew on button. Weave in ends. Wash with baby friendly detergent or soap and block.




On a side note, does anyone know how difficult it is to get a one year old to cooperate? Not the best model. A few outtakes for fun, shall we?
