Маркус Гирертс Младший родился в Брюгге; сын художника Маркуса Гирертс Старшего и его жены Джоанны. Как и другие художники-протестанты, Гирертс Старший бежал в Англию с сыном, чтобы избежать преследований в Нидерландах Герцогом Альба.
