Sue Howells

“They Didn't Forecast This!!!” by Sue Howells

Sue Howells’s Biography

Sue Howells has been active in the market place for six years, and now has a reputation as one of the top selling artists in the UK, providing work for Harrods and John Lewis, as well as for galleries abroad - from the USA to New Zealand. She also provides paintings for TV programs and advertisements.

Sue Howells began painting in 1982 and is self taught in all aspects of watercolour painting. Sue joined the RBSA in 1988 and has exhibited in London, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Ireland. Sue Howells likes to paint solely in watercolours, because she thinks it produces pictures which are both energetic and which have a strong compositional value.

"And now just a little about me. I began painting in 1982 and am self taught in all aspects of watercolour painting. I joined the RBSA in 1988 and have exhibited in London, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Ireland. I like to paint solely in watercolours, because I think it lets me produce pictures which are both energetic and which have a strong compositional value".

Recently voted the best selling female artist in the UK by The Fine Art Trade Guild Sue Howells' art has recently become a much sought after commodity. Known for her interpretation of landscapes and buildings, she has developed a uniquely bold and vivid style. Her blend of moody atmospheres and delicate abstraction has won her numerous awards and sell out shows across the country.

Recently focusing on towns and their inhabitants Sue has created a new world within watercolours. “On the Street Where You Live, ” one of her best sellers, the viewer is drawn into the magically dark and translucent street heaving with wandering locals.

Sue recently commented,

"I paint solely in watercolours aiming to produce pictures which are both energetic and of a strong compositional value. By using a great economy of brushstroke, I work as loosely as possible, letting the paint speak for itself as watercolours can be controlled but never bullied. I spend much of my time in Pembrokeshire recording the moody winter atmosphere of the coastal towns."

Sue continues to broaden her range of subjects, maintaining her national appeal and will be a well respected artist for the foreseeable future.

Sue Howells works mainly in watercolours. Known for her interpretation of landscapes and buildings, Sue Howells has developed a bold and vivid style to express her view of the world and bring perspective to her paintings.

Sue Howells continues to broaden her range of subjects, maintaining her energy and colours by using an economy of brush strokes. The colours she uses take on a wide range of hues when she adds light and dark, giving a translucent quality coupled with brush texture and an ability to use contrasting colour to good effect.

Sue Howells work is highly sought after. We have both originals and limited editions of Sue Howells pictures at Myton Gallery.
