Step 1
We will start making the peeled orange section. To get the color of the orange fruit, mix equal amounts of yellow and translucent clay as shown in my picture. Then add a little less then 1:4 of white clay and a tiny piece of orange clay to the mix.
You don't need much clay, to give you an idea of how much my yellow clay in this picture is approximately 1,5 cm (just over ½") in each side and the width is about 0,7 cm (¼").
Mix the clay well, so the color is even.

Step 2
Now roll the clay into a even snake approximately 4mm (just over 1/8") in diameter. Then measure up and cut of a section of 6mm (¼") from the snake.
[показать]
Step 3
Roll the section into a ball.
If you see any fibre or dust in the clay, scrape it of with your nail. The clay often is like a magnet to those irritating small particles!
[показать]
Step 4
Take your little ball and place it at your left index finger. Then use your thumbs and form the ball so it becomes flat underneath and round at the top, as in my pictures.
[показать]
Step 5
If needed, you can use a flat clean surface to lay down the orange at and adjust its form.
[показать]
Step 6
Results after flattening.

[показать]
Step 7
Use a single sided razor blade and make two parallel scores in the middle of the orange section. They should be about 1mm deep (1/32").
[показать]
Step 8
Then remove the clay between the lines with your blade or a needle, be careful so you don´t cut yourself.
[показать]
Step 9
Use a toothpick and smooth/even the surface in the score.
[показать]
Step 10
Make a shallow line in the middle of the score with your razor blade. This will be where two orange section meets.
[показать]
[показать]
Step 11
Now turn the orange section over with the round side up and make a line in the middle with your razor blade.
[показать]
Step 12
On each side of the middle line, make two more equally spaced lines with the razor blade. These lines should then go towards the middle-score (but do not meet) so they look like orange-sections. To make them equally sized, make marks before doing the lines.
Look at my picture for guidance, but the sections don´t have to be perfectly even sized just about the same.
[показать]
Step 13
Now, turn the orange-section over and correct the flat surface and score, if needed. You will now make the lines between orange sections in the score. This can be a bit tricky, but just take your time.
Start with the first orange section at the top, look for the two lines that comes from the back side. Then take your blade and connect the two lines.
If you look close at my picture you will see these lines, coming from the back side.
[показать]
Step 14
Your orange section should look like the image. With one line that makes a orange section.
[показать]
Step 15
Repeat the last step with the rest of the lines that comes up from the back of the orange.
TIP: If the clay is to soft and it is hard to maintain the lines and form on the orange, you can put the clay in the freezer for a minute and the clay will get much more firm.
BAKING
Bake your orange section in the manufacturers recommended setting, I use Fimo soft which should be baked in 110´C for 15 minuets.
When you have done this and your orange have cooled down, proceed to Step 17.

Step 17
Now you are going to need white color to paint the orange sections surface. I use White pastel chalk to do this, I think It gives the right texture and translucency. But you can also use any other white paint, the important thing is that it is not to opaque. Scrape of some white color with your razor blade on a paper and add a little water to it.
Use a fine artist brush and paint a line of white on each orange section, like in the picture. These lines can be uneven and you can also paint small veins from them if you like.
NOTE: I often buy a reference orange to look at while making the miniature version. This helps a lot if you want to make the miniature as realistic as possible.

Step 18
This is my orange after painting it´s backside.

Step 19
Turn the orange over and paint a line closest to the score/pit. Then paint small lines/veins that goes out from your line. Do this on both sides. Then also paint the score/pit moderately.
[показать]
Step 20
You now have a peeled orange section!
[показать]
Step 21
Now we will make orange peels to display with your peeled orange!
My shade of orange is much to sharp in its color to look realistic so I will mix in yellow and caramel brown. If you have the shade called Mandarine as me, use my mix to tone it down. I find most of the orange shades is to sharply orange, while oranges often have a more warm tone.
The proportions in my mix is equally large parts of yellow and orange and then a tiny piece of caramel brown. You don't need much clay, my orange at the picture is 1cm (1/32") on each side and 0,5cm width (3/16" or just under ¼").

Step 22
Now we are ready to make the orange peel. Put aside a bit more than a pea sized piece of this orange clay, to make one or more whole oranges later.
Then to get the color of the inside of the orange peel, mix one part of white and a tiny piece of yellow as shown in the picture below.
[показать]
Step 23
Now roll your orange clay mix in a pasta machine at grade 5.
If you don´t have a pasta machine you can roll out the clay with a rolling pin or a jar, try to get it as even as possible, about 1mm (1/32").
[показать]
Step 24
When you have done that roll the white mix in the pasta machine at grade 5,5 or 6 if you can.
If rolling the clay out whit a rolling pin try to get it as thin as possible.
[показать]
Step 25
Now put the white sheet on top of the orange sheet and lay it with the orange side down on a sandpaper.
[показать]
Step 26
Check that there are no tiny fibres on the white clay, this will ruining the result later on.
Now use your needle or needle tool and texture the surface with small movements. Think of how orange peels looks inside and try to get that effect.
[показать]
Step 27
Now you take your one sided razor blade (or a knife) and cut out a tiny peel. Then curl the little peel a bit with your fingers (like if it have actually came from a round orange).
[показать]
Step 28
Vary the sizes and shapes of the orange peels, they can be from 3-9mm (just over 3/32" to just under 3/8").
Put the orange peels on a tile and bake them in the oven according to your clay manufacturers recommendations. Mine is Fimo® soft, so I bake them in 15 minutes in 110C (235F).
[показать]
Step 29
Take the orange clay mix that you put aside earlier. Roll this clay into a even snake approximately 6mm (just under ¼") in diameter. Then measure up and cut of a section of 7mm (just over ¼") from the snake.
Note, my ruler here only shows centimeters.
[показать]
Step 30
Now roll the orange clay into a ball on your sandpaper.
[показать]
Step 31
Use a tooth pick and make a small pit in the orange.
[показать]
[показать]
Step 32
Use a needle or needle tool and make fine lines in the orange, like shown in my picture.
[показать]
Step 33
Mix a tiny piece of caramel brown clay to a larger piece of white clay, the proportions isn't exact.
[показать]
Step 34
Now take a tiny piece of this clay mix, about 1mm x 1mm (just over 1/8") and roll it to a tiny ball. Then put this ball in the pit on the orange and press it down a bit whit a tooth pick.
Bake your orange according to your clay manufacturers recommended time and temperature.
You now have your whole orange!
[показать]
Step 35
Now you can display you peeled orange section, your orange peels and oranges together or with other fruits if you like!
[показать]
Step 36
Finished!
This is my completed orange.
