Picnic Basket
Supply List
1/4 yard of fabric
Square of felt
Freezer paper, wrapping paper or newspaper to draw your pattern
Sewing supplies
Step 1 – Make the Basket Pattern
Draw a 9 x 12 inch rectangle on paper.
Fold this in half.
Draw a rectangle at each corner that is 1 inch up from the fold and 1 1/4 inches in from the sides.
Cut out this little rectangle.
Open the pattern and label it “picnic basket – cut 1 of fabric and 1 of felt”
Step 2 – Make the Basket Handle Pattern
Draw and 8 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch rectangle on paper and label it “Basket Handle – cut 1 of fabric and 1 of felt”
Step 3 – Cut the fabrics
Stack the fabric and felt on the table. Pin the basket and handle patterns on top and cut them out.
Step 4 – Sew the Handle
Place the handle fabric and together with “pretty” sides touching and pin.
Sew along both long edges using a 3/8 seam.
Turn the tube pretty side out.
Top stitch along both long edges using your presser foot as a guide.This will keep the handle flat and neat.
Step 5 – Attach the Handle
Mark the center of the fabric and the top and bottom edges.
Center the handle a the dots with “pretty” sides touching. Make the edges even and pin.
Stitch across the handle to hold it in place using a 1/4 inch seam.
Step 6 – Top Edges
Place the fabric and felt together with pretty sides touching. Make the top and bottom edges even and pin.
Sew the top and bottom edges using a 3/8 inch seam.
Turn pretty side out.
Step 7 – Sew the Sides Edges
Fold the basket in half with the fabric touching and felt on the outside. Make the edges even and pin.
Sew both sides using a 3/8 inch seam.
Step 8 – Sew the Corners
Pull the notched corners out and bring the edges together shaping the bag. Make the edges even and pin.
Sew the corners using a 3/8 inch seam.
Turn basket pretty side out.
