The Great Fushimi Earthquake (1596).
By Yoshitoshi Taiso.
The temblor destroyed Fushimi Castle, which was built only a few years earlier by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In this scene, the ladies of the palace take refuge on a hilltop at a temporary encampment under a pine tree, hurrying towards Hideyoshi with worried expressions. A messenger kneels before him, reporting the news while behind them, the castle collapses into piles of rubble with roof tiles falling everywhere.
