Young Lovers across a River.
By Toyokuni III/Kunisada.
A scene from the kabuki play "Imoseyama onna teikin," which tells the story of a young couple who fall in love, unaware that their families are bitter rivals with estates on either side of the Yoshino River.
The beauty kneels on the bank at lower left dressed in a red floral kimono, smiling happily as she regards her lover across the rushing river framed by flowering cherry trees. He returns her gaze happily to the amusement of her attendants, who whisper and giggle at the exchange. Inside her home, a large tiered display is set up for Girls' Day, holding dolls representing the Emperor and Empress along with offerings.
