It happened during an Indian winter. A stray dog gave birth to puppies, and I felt compelled to help them. I found a box, placed a warm blanket inside, and fed them every day. But the children from the neighboring house, where tenants lived, mistreated the puppies—throwing sticks and stones at them. Every time I heard noise, I went outside to check what was happening and tried to protect the puppies.
One day, I heard a puppy crying and decided to go outside. I saw the puppy hiding under a car, trying to escape from a child. The child was our neighbor, from that tenant family. I went into their yard and asked the boy’s mother to watch her son and teach him not to harm animals. The woman politely agreed, assuring me that she would be more attentive. At that moment, I didn’t realize this would mark the beginning of a terrible revenge.
A few days later, I found one of the puppies dead. Its body was carefully placed in the box I had prepared for them. It was evident that it had been run over by a car. I tried convincing myself that it was an accident, but a nagging suspicion lingered—after all, the neighbors’ car was always parked right next to the box.
One by one, the puppies started disappearing. I couldn’t take them home because I already had a dog. One morning, the neighbors moved out early. When I went to my car, I noticed something written on the misty rear window in Devanagari script: *"pagal"*—which translates to “crazy” in English.
I could only assume it was written by the same neighbor, the head of the family. I couldn’t believe that people could harbor such hatred over a simple but rightful remark. His silent revenge became clearer to me. At first, I doubted who could hate me so much, but as the pieces fell into place, I realized it was the family’s father. He had sought revenge for my words to his child—killing defenseless puppies and leaving me with this final message.
I felt utterly defenseless. Indian society, which claims to uphold lofty philosophical values and humanity, often falls far short of these ideals. I realized how dangerous it is to make remarks to such people, especially as a woman.
Had I been living alone, their revenge might have been even more brutal. Even within my family, I faced this incomprehensible cruelty for which there was neither protection nor resolution.
This experience made me reflect on the nature of human malice. How can we protect the vulnerable when even kindness can provoke vengeance?
