Deadlock
A 'deadlock' is used in a number of ways, a deadlock is a strong bolted and usually unbreakable component of a door that locks the door shut in an immovable manner.
'Please use the deadlock when you are not in the house.'
And the same word, ‘deadlock’ also refers to a situation that is made up of typically two parties where no progress can be made as no one is willing to change their position.
'We have been negotiating for 3 days now and I think we are deadlocked.'
The word deadlock implies that the parties involved in the negotiation have exhausted all options and now are unable to offer anything new to change the situation.
'After offering all kinds of incentives they decided to accept none and we are still deadlocked.'
For someone to 'break the deadlock' means that they have done something to change the situation and presented a changed position and this change is viewed favourably and results in agreement between the parties.
'The deadlock was broken after they offered to provide free flights for our staff.'
