Al-Ra’oof (the Compassionate) means the One Who consoles broken hearts, supports the weak and comes to the aid of those who seek His help and turn only to Him. This attribute requires humans to be merciful to their fellow humans and even to animals, as the Prophet (pbuh) said, “Whoever is not merciful will not receive mercy.” (Al-Bukhaari) Furthermore, he narrated to us the story of a prostitute who was forgiven her sins and put in paradise for graciously going out of her way to provide water for a dog dying of thirst.
