It's hard to tell a black sand beach from a white or golden sand beach at night. In this Hawaiian black sand beach however, that didn't matter, thanks to an enchanting array of colors dressing up the sky and the landscape.

Here's another image that didn't make the cut for the Hawai'i Nights book. This time, Makena Beach, in Maui. A popular destination during the day, closed to the public at night (why?)...
The two islands are Kahoʻolawe (center right) and Molokini (small islet, right of Kahoʻolawe), neither of which is inhabited.

Natural Disparities and where's the backpack?
A rising Milky Way on the left, a setting Moon on the right, the peak of a massive granite rock in the center. As usual, it's not a composite (unless I specify it is)

Possibility of major geomagnetic storming tonight! That means the Aurora Borealis could be visible and I'm holding a workshop on the Kancamagus Pass in Lincoln, NH on how to photograph the Northern Lights.

Пояснение: Вы могли не догадаться, но в тот момент, когда был снят этот ночной пейзаж, до рассвета ещё оставались долгие часы. Это фотография с видом на восточный горизонт в отдалённом месте чилийской пустыни Атакама. Однако необычно светлый конус света, протянувшийся вверх на фоне тёмного звёздного неба — это свет от Солнца, рассеянный пылинками в плоскости эклиптики в Солнечной системе. Это явление называется Зодиакальный свет, но оно известно также под именем ложного рассвета. Около центра картинки видна яркая звезда Альдебаран и скопление Плеяды. Вместе с созвездием Ориона справа они кажутся затопленными Зодиакальным светом. Красноватое свечение туманности Калифорния, или NGC 1499, можно увидеть сквозь дымчатое свечение атмосферы у самого горизонта. Это замечательное место — площадка для будущего Гигантского Магелланов телескопа обсерватории Лас-Кампанас.
