Wes Learns to Use a Telescope

Night sky watcher Daniel Lanpher sent in a photo of his son, Wes, learning to use the family's telescope in Lansdale PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, taken in early December 2012. Lanpher writes: "In the image you can see Jupiter and the Pleiades cluster and lots o' light pollution!"

Supernova 2005dh and Spiral Galaxy NGC 1559
Colour-composite image of the spiral galaxy NGC 1559 in the Reticulum constellation, obtained with the multi-mode FORS1 instrument on ESO's 8.2m VLT. The supernova, SN 2005df, is visible as the bright star just above the galaxy. Many background galaxies can also be seen in this image.

This composite image of data from three different telescopes shows an ongoing collision between two galaxies, NGC 6872 and IC 4970 (roll your mouse over the image above). X-ray data from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is shown in purple, while Spitzer Space Telescope's infrared data is red and optical data from ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) is colored red, green and blue.

Lots of Auroras last night in Vesterålen.It was a 6 hour trip in perfect conditions. This is Vangpollen, a few kilometers from Blokken.
