[показать]Since I don't make much money, once in a while, I like to figure out whether I'll be able to pay for all absolutely necessary expenses by comparing them to my prospective income. This is what I've been trying to do today, and, to be honest, it ain't pretty at all. I blame everything on all the credit cards I have!

I've got my first credit card from CapitalOne absolutely unexpectedly. After being rejected by numerous banks because of nonexistent credit history, I gave up any hope of ever being approved, until, sometime in Fall of 2008, I received letter informing me of being preapproved for credit card I didn't even apply for. The amount of credit the bank offered was laughable ($300), however, I knew that it was an important foundation for building credit history and, thus, was extremely excited.

I didn't know much about credit policies back then and thought that the more credit cards I had the better, so I got one from almost every retail store I liked. Later, I found out that frequent requires and big number of revolving accounts with rather low credit limits actually have negative impact on the credit score. Having learned it, I closed all the store credit cards and was left with just two bank credit cards. Since available credit on both of the cards was rather low, I mostly used them to pay my tuition installments when I didn't have enough money saved and, unlike most Americans, never carried my balance to the next month.

I certainly indulged in unnecessary spending once in a while, but it wasn't too bad since there wasn't much extra money to spend...until one day I was stupid enough to apply for Macy's credit card. Imagine my surprise when I was given $3000 store credit. Starting from that moment, I could basically shop as much as I wanted and never run out of money (assuming that I paid my bills on time, of course). Before, I had to save for about a month to afford a little shopping spree and, naturally, I was able to spend just as much as I managed to save and not a penny more. With store credit on hand, however, I could shop practically whenever I wanted.

Starting from that moment, every time I was in the bad mood, I'd try to improve it by going shopping, which, of course, wouldn't have been possible if I hadn't had that credit card. For the next couple of months, I spent much more than reasonable amount of money on new stuff, took some time to pay the bill, and repeated the cycle again. Being in not a very rosy mood most of the time, I didn't feel like paying attention to the fact that I was spending all the money I was supposed to be saving on my credit card bills...I knew that I was running myself into trouble but simply couldn't make myself think about it.

Having paid my last Macy's bill today and estimated prospective revenues and expenses after that, I came to a conclusion that $3000 is the maximum amount of money I'll be able to save before moving to NYC, assuming I limit unnecessary expenses to $0. This is actually quite an issue because I don't even know what kind of job I'll be able to find there and might have to live for some time with what I've got. Taking into consideration that I'll have to pay my first tuition installment sometime in December and that limiting myself to $0 spending during next 6+ months is unrealistic, there is a good chance that my new address will be Central Park bench. If I could kick myself really hard right now, I'd definitely would!

With the majority of Americans overspending on a much larger scale, no wonder that the US economy is in shambles!

oh those credit cards!
I have 2 now. Actually technically speaking only one :) second one is a joint one with my husband. I prefer to use them on small amounts here and there and to have available credit to the max "just in case" :)
When are you moving to NY?

I would have also preferred to use them as little as possible, but, as it turns out, I don't have any willpower :)

I'm moving to the city in the mid-December or in the beginning of January, so there's still some time to think everything through...

I could never understand how the credit system works and still a bit confused by it, so I just never used it. No, wait, I bought my MacBook, but paid it off as soon as I could.

I totally agree that Americans are too spoilt by credit cards. They get them when they are like 15-16 y.o. (joint with parents, but still), so they learn to spend the money the don't have at a very early age. And then it becomes worse and worse. I know pretty wealthy people, who only seem that way, because they also have tens of thousands dollars in credit card debt!
I got my firest credit card after about 2 years in Canada. Before that, I always lived from paycheck to paycheck counting every dollar. My husband at the time did not have any credit cards either.
And I also got my first one unexpcetidly: I went to an NHL game and they were giving away free shirts and hat with our team logos if you apply for a card, so I did and got my free stuff :) I was really surpirsed when in a week I received a CC in the mail with $2500 limit! WOW :) I guess I already had some credit hystory, cause I got a student loan a few months after moving to Canada and had been paying it off on time. And that company kept increasing my limit up until it became $6000.
But I always saw it only as emergency fund. It was nice to know that if something happens, I have these 6 grand available to me any time. That is how I treted it. And it really helped when I separated from my husband and had to find a new place to live + pay damage deposit + get some furniture for the new place etc... But I always tried to make more than a minimum payment and tried to pay it off ASAP.
Now I have joint cards with my husband and I don't even know what the limist on them are, I imagine they are somewhere in 10-15K range. But what we do is: we pay everything with the credit cards and then pay off the balance from our bank acct each month. So we spend like 2-3K each month and it all goes to our CC. Why? Because we get some money back :) So we earn I think like 1% on that. So if, say, we spend 24000 a year on the card, we'll get $240 back - why not? :) Many people use CC just for that. But of course you have to watch your bills to pay in time each month, so you won't get interest charges.

Iron-Orchid, the problem is, you will need a good credit rating when you decide to buy a house or a car. So it is a good idea to start working on your credit score ASAP. All you need to do is get a credit card and pay for some routing things with it, but be sure to pay the balance off completely each month - this way you won't get any interest charges and your credit score will be going up.
Now, I actually wonder, you said you only took a loan once for your MacBook. What about your car? Do you have any student loans? Those affect your credit score too.

self-made, I also try to pay my bills in full every month, unless I absolutely can't afford it...the only difference is that I wasn't supposed to spend all this money to begin with :)

Iron-Orchid, it's actually very simple :) I look at my credit cards as if they were a couple of friends who would borrow me money every time I need it, but, not being good friends, would charge % on it ))))

MiaGellar, I don't remember myself ever having problem with spending too much money :) I do like to go shopping every now and then, but I always have an approximate maximum I am willing to spend, say: 200, 300 or even 500. And I only go shopping when I have money. If I need some shopping therapy, but I don't have money, I just go and spend an hour or two browsing the mall and trying stuff on and then at the end buy just one thing that I loved the most :)

self-made, it's all different for me...every time I go to the mall to buy one thing, I end up with a whole bunch of stuff...no willpower at all :)

A vobshe esli estj sila voli i viderzka to kreditki dejstvitelno mogut statj bolshoj neobhodimostju ))

-Baileys-, в США, по-моему, на любой брэнд, кроме, пожалуй, безумно дорогих, можно кредитку найти...именно этими кредитками они из нас деньги и выманивают :)

Being fed up with "American way of managing my finances" which is no more than simply hooking you up first with more loans, then debts, fees, penalties etc i realize that my life without Credit cards was much much more happy, healthy and confident.I already own my place(i paying 30y fixed mortgage recently modified at 4.5% of interest),i leasing my car but prefer to buy one for whole prices as i did in past and i consider it smart way to managing my finances in order to safe money. So what do i get to lose now, right? After i got what i needed i filed for bankruptcy on 20000$ credit card debt. Why? Damn!Because it feels fantastic to win at least once and not let Banks get away with their own crap! It’s time to pull out the big guns:=)Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, which is total bankruptcy, stays on your credit report for only 10 years. It means complete freedom from your CC debt and if you don't plan to get more loans in nearest future like me, you will finally get a brake and start breathing.))
Being ripped of by credit cards institutions for years i got sense of deep disappointment over it.It is obvious that all the system based on sucking all your money in order to keep you paying unrealistic ridiculous fees and never ever see the light in the tunnel! Yeah, for having bad memory you will pay and a lot! All this stop check fees, overdraft fees, saddenly raising APR and others "maintenance" that cost you $$$ yearly- thanks for that! They wanted me to get screw out? But i prefer them taste their own medicine.
