Ernest Louis was the fourth child and eldest son of Grand Duke Louis IV and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, daughter of Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha . He was an older brother to Alix of Hesse, Empress Consort of Nicholas II of Russia - Alexandra Feodorovna.

He was the son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich of Russia by his wife Elisaveta Mavrikievna, née Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg.
Ukaz of his cousin Emperor Alexander III of Russia amended the House Law by limiting the grand-ducal title to grandsons of a reigning emperor. As a result Konstantine received the title Prince of the Imperial Blood (Prince of Russia) with the style Highness.

Shows Emperor Nicholas II , his mother dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna,
wife Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna in Sarov, in 1903, attending Russian festivities assosiated with Canonization of Saint Serafim of Sarov (1759-1833), the miracle worker, one of the most respected saints of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Saint Serafim of Sarov had long been venerated by the common people.
Living as a hermit in Sarov forests of Nizhny Novgorod region, he performed miracles and was known particularly for helping women suffering from infertility.
He was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903.
