Байка о том, как учитель делает невозможное возможным ;) 15-04-2008 13:54 к комментариям - к полной версии - понравилось!

There is a Sufi story with a mathematical flavor. I think that I read this in one of Idriah Shah's collections. But I do not remember the story's name nor which book. So here is my retelling.

A wise father had three sons. He wanted them to continue to learn after his death.

The inheritance law in that country was that the oldest son would inherit 1/2 of the estate, the second son, 1/3 and the youngest son, 1/9th.

When the father died, he left behind, 17 camels. The sons tried to figure out how to follow the law. But 17 is a prime number. It cannot be equally divided.

Finally the sons went to a Sufi teacher for advice. He listened to their dilemma. He told them to meet him with their camels, the following day.

The next day he rode to their home on his own camel. He put his own camel in with theirs. Then he told them to to divide their inheritance.

The oldest son got 9 camels.
The second son got 6 camels.
The youngest son got 2 camels.

And the teacher rode his own camel away...
