NR chats to GOF's Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe plays Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Newsround chatted with him to find out about the challenges of making the fourth film.

What were the biggest challenges for you on this one?
Physically the biggest challenge was doing all the underwater stuff, because when you get home at the end of the day you were exhausted. It is very, very tiring doing that, but it was fun, I'm glad I did it because I can look back and say I was underwater for about a month!

I suppose in terms of the acting challenges, all the stuff towards the end with Voldemort and then bringing Cedric back, those scenes were pretty tough to do but I really enjoyed doing them.

How did you get yourself emotionally into that last part of the film?
I can't really even remember. It's a process so you start off a certain place and a certain level and you draw on your own experiences.

Obviously none of my experiences have even come close to anything Harry has to deal with, but I sort of draw on the most upsetting thing that I can remember and then you refine it and refine it.

And Mike (Newell - director) was fantastic because he was pushing me further and further with his direction he was really keen on pushing me far as he possibly could.

Of course the other part of the film, apart from all the terror and suspense was the romance, how was that?
It was great. It was really fun to do and we had Mike Newell directing us, who has directed arguably one of the greatest romantic comedies ever, so it was absolutely fantastic.

I think it what was quite good is that certain bits of the film are all so dark, that it's good to have bits to balance it out, like all the stuff with Cho Chang and the dribbling of the orange juice and all of those things.

How easy was it working with Katie, doing those kind of embarrassing scenes?
it wasn't particularly embarrassing, it was okay, it was just funny.

I mean she's beautiful so I didn't really have to act that much, it wasn't hard to act as if I was in love with her or anything because she's beautiful, it was really fun.

It wasn't so much embarrassing but there were a couple of awkward moments after certain scenes when we didn't know quite know what to say but, it was great.

What was it like working with Rupert and Emma again? You've known each other for five years now..
It's was fine, it was great. I think we know each other quite well now so when we get back on set it's like there hasn't been time in between, it's just another day really.

It's great working with them, particularly in this one with Rupert where me and Ron have a little sort of spat, that was really enjoyable.

You as Dan, how do find mixing your film life with the rest of your life? How easy is it to have a normal teenage life?
Well the main thing is, I don't read any of the stories that are written because I think then that's the moment I'd become warped. I value my sanity too much to read all that. It hasn't really affected me that much in terms of my actual life.

Obviously I'm aware that not all teenagers are going and doing all of these things, but you know to me, that has become normality. I get recognised on the street, but that's about the extent of it.

No big showbiz parties?
No, I don't think I'd be very good at them.

With this film, we're four in, so do you see yourself possibly doing all seven?
I'm definitely doing the fifth one, I start filming in February.

After that it is a long way away, but when I was reading the sixth book, I was sort of going there's some stuff in here I'd really love to do.

I was trying to read it in quite an impartial way, not having made any decisions yet, but certain bits, like the whole of the cave chapter, all of that would be really fun to do.

Did you get an advance copy?
Absolutely not. In a way I wouldn't want to because I sort of get to discover what happens along with the rest of the world.

Unfortunately someone did reveal to me what happens at the end.

I was in Australia when it came out and apparently someone had done a drive-by spoiler, where they drove past a bookshop where people were queueing which is horrible, but quite funny in a way.

Surely you don't go to a bookshop at midnight and buy a copy?
No, that would be a very, very unwise thing to do. We order our copy in advance so we get sent it on the day of release.

Was this film really that much bigger in scale to do?
It is bigger, but in a way you don't really feel that because one day you'll do a really big scene and then you'll do a string of low key scenes so by the time you get to the next big scene you've almost forgotten about the last one.

You only get a sense of how big and spectacular it really is when you get to see the finished film at the end.

Did JK Rowling come down to set this time?
No, not at all. I think she, and rightly,

THERE'S MORE TO ME THAN HARRY POTTER
It's Day 2 in our amazing Hogwarts week. And today we speak to the film's star Daniel Radcliffe. Showbiz editor Rick Fulton talks to the young star of the latest J. K. Rowling blockbuster.
Rick Fulton
DANIEL Radcliffe is ready to prove to the world that he's more than just Harry Potter.

The 16-year-old actor has spent the past five years bringing J. K. Rowling's famous character to life. But he knows, if he's going to have a career outside of the Potter movies, he has to show that he can be more than the boy wizard.

His first chance will be with December Boys, which he is gearing up to shoot at the end of next year.

He will fly to Australia to play Maps, an orphan the same age as himself.

Daniel said: "He's very different from Harry. He doesn't have Harry's zest for life. But I don't feel under pressure. I just want to do the best job I can.

"I want to do a good accent so that the Australians watching the film are going: 'That's a good accent'."

It certainly seems Daniel is taking the part and the accent very seriously - he spends every Thursday training with a dialect coach from the National Theatre.

The film is about four Australian boys, Maps being the eldest, who have been brought up in a Catholic orphanage in the Australian Outback. The orphanage comes into money and the boys, who have never seen the sea before, are sent to the seaside as a birthday treat.

Daniel said: "I start filming the day after I arrive. It will be interesting with the jet lag, but it'll be great. I'm really, really excited about it.

"My dad's going with me, but my mom is coming out as well later on.

"We're down there probably for about six weeks, I think. We film part of it in Adelaide or Kangaroo Island but none of that is confirmed yet."

Despite a part in the Pierce Brosnan film The Tailor of Panama in 2001, with four Potter movies under his belt it seems Daniel is now out to prove he's got more going for him than being Harry.

With the fourth film in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, out on Friday the lives of the boy wizard and Daniel are inextricably linked.

But each new film has people asking if it will be Daniel's last because he's getting too old to play the schoolboy. It would be difficult, however, to see anyone else in the role the actor has played since he was 11 in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

At the moment he plays Harry as a 14 year old and, while he's already signed up to star in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, out in 2007, he said: "There is always this thing of whether we will get too old for the part. People actually play a lot younger than they are in real life.

"I don't think that it's as big an issue as a lot of people make it out to be."

It looks highly likely that he, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint will continue to star in all seven of the Harry Potter films even as they continue to mature.

Daniel said: "Ultimately, it comes down to whether we're still enjoying it. If we are, then I think it would be sort of stupid not to do them.

"As long as I'm doing enough other stuff around the same time, I think it'll be fine. Also, I sort of try to read the books when they come out impartially and not make up my mind, but the fact is when I was reading the sixth, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, there were bits in there where I was going: 'God, I would love to do that because it's so good'."

Despite the two-year age gap, Daniel still admits that he shares many parallels with his character - such as girls. He said: "Both me and Harry are not very good with women."

In the latest film Harry develops a crush on Cho Chang, played by Katie Leung in her debut. But Cho knocks back Harry when he asks her to the Yule Ball.

Daniel said: "I would like to say I get huge amounts of attention, but I think there's a sort of dividing thing between what people think they're going to get when they see the film and what the reality is. I think it's slightly grimmer possibly."

But Daniel is also unlike Harry in other ways - such as sport. As Harry, Daniel is in the premier league as a Quidditch player, but the actor admits that off-screen he's awful at sport, preferring to watch it on the television.

Daniel, who supports Fulham, laughed: "I'm not great at sport. I mean, I like watching athletics.

Empire talks to Michael Gambon
Empire Magazine released an interview with everybody's favorite Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, played by Michael Gambon. When asked what makes Dumbledore the greatest wizard of all time, Gambon replied:

"I have no idea. I learn the lines that JK Rowling or whoever writes them, and say them. There’s no subtext in Harry Potter really; it’s all magic, anything can happen."

В черный список попали: The Thrills, Jet и Darkness.

(Listen to audio clip).

(The War of Don Emmanuels Nether Parts)

(Listen to audio clip).

Polished Potter ups fright factor
By Keily Oakes
BBC News entertainment reporter

Just months after the publicity fanfare over the sixth Harry Potter book, the fourth movie is about to arrive in the cinema, with Harry facing more danger as he returns to Hogwarts.
Director Mike Newell called JK Rowling's Goblet of Fire "a brick of a book", adding it would have been impossible to include everything in just one film.

The Potter children have improved with age
Rather than splitting it in two, large chunks have been slashed, leaving the bare bones of the story of Harry Potter's fourth year at wizard school and his first face-to-face encounter with his nemesis Voldemort.

The entire opening has been cut so, this time, the Dursley family do not get a look in. Instead Harry starts out at the Weasleys - unfortunately without Julie Walters (Mrs Weasley).

With some of the story glossed over it leaves more time for some impressive set scenes such as the Quidditch World Cup.

It is stirring stuff to see the teams whizzing around on broomsticks inside a stadium that reaches into the clouds.

Seamless handover

The Triwizard Tournament, in which wizards are set potentially fatal tasks, shows off some quality special effects.

After the high of the contest comes the news that Voldemort's followers the Death-eaters are regrouping, sparking scary scenes that justify the film's 12A rating (meaning young children cannot see it without adult supervision).

An unrecognisable Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort also ups the scare factor several notches.

Brendan Gleeson plays Mad-Eye Moody as suitably unhinged
While it is certainly darker than previous films it also displays more of the teenage angst experienced by the wizards in the lead-up to their first formal dance.

Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson have improved greatly as Harry, Ron and Hermione since their first stilted performances five years ago.

Their confidence has grown with age and its now easier to accept them in their roles rather than young actors still trying to find their feet.

The new crop of youngsters playing the likes of Cedric Diggory, Victor Krum and Fleur Delacour have wisely been given restricted lines, so their acting skills are not particularly tested.

Slick performances come from Alan Rickman as Professor Snape and Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody, while Michael Gambon has made Dumbledore his own, having inherited it from the late Richard Harris.

Although Newell is new to the franchise, there is no clear difference between his style and previous Potter director Alfonso Cuaron's in The Prisoner of Azkaban, although there was a marked difference between Cuaron and Chris Columbus, who directed movies one and two.

Newell has created a polished movie. It will delight existing Potter fans, but, like the later books, it could be too hard for a new audience to follow the complex storylines this far into the series.

Goblet press conference in full

Established Potter stars Dan Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint were joined by new cast members at a special event to launch Goblet Of Fire.
The movie will premiere in London on 6 November.

CBBC Newsround squeezed into the packed press conference to get the latest gossip from the film's stars, plus director Mike Newell and producer David Heyman.

It was probably the first time under the spotlight for Stanislav Ianevski (Viktor), Clemence Poesy (Fleur), Katie Leung (Cho) and Robert Pattinson (Cedric), but they coped really well.

Check out what everyone had to say..

What's it been like for the new cast members?
Robert: It was a great experience. I'd never done anything on this scale or budget, Everything about it was an incredible epic experience.

Clemence: It was the first time I found myself in such a big movie. We were all welcomed and it made things easier for us.

Katie: Words cannot describe the experience. It's just been amazing.

Stanislav: It was great to be part of such a large picture. I have enjoyed every single moment and I hope to experience it again.

What was it like directing the film?
Mike: It was very daunting to start with. The book is as big as a house brick and one is unsure how to attack it. Little by little you lose your terror of it. At the end of it looking back, I am terribly proud.

Dan and Katie

Who would be your dream Yule Ball date?
Daniel: I recently saw a film with Natalie Portman in it and I fell in love with her, so Natalie Portman, or maybe Scarlett Johansson.

Emma: I cannot think of anyone in particular.

How have things changed since you made the first film?
Daniel: It's been an odd five years but it's been great. We've got a while before the films end and we're not confirmed in the roles beyond the fifth film.

It's become easier to act in each of the films. I've been through all the same stuff as Harry - like the hormones and everything. I've been doing it since I was 11, so it makes it easier in the long run.

Emma: It felt like I didn't have to act at times. I know Hermione so well. There's so much of her in me, and me in her. It's been wonderful and I'm very fond of Hermoine's character. She's turning into someone that people can identify with and she's a great role model.

Rupert: When I did the first film, it was a bit scary. I've probably learned a lot since then. Mike (the director) was great. We had a really good laugh.

How did you get your copy of HBP?
Emma: I queued up like everyone else.

Daniel: I got it off Amazon. If I had queued up, I probably would have been signing things for six hours!

What do you think should happen next in Potter?
Emma: Hermoine and Ron have got to get together - it's been going on for so long!

Daniel: For it to be set in a more exotic location - like Thailand or the Caribbean!

What music/bands do you like?
Rupert: I like rock - stuff like AC/DC and The Killers.

Emma: The most recent CD I bought was Imogen Heap. My music is split into what I like listening to and what I like dancing to. I like listening to mellow stuff like Damien Rice and Natalie Imbruglia. I like dancing to hip hop.

Daniel: Music is something I'm quite passionate about, so I might go on a bit. There's a new band called Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I also like The Rakes, Dogs, Hard-Fi, The Libertines - although unfortunately they are no more - and an American band called Louis XIV. Has anyone heard of them?

Most embarrassing film moment?
Daniel: My most embarrassing moment was the dancing. And I really wanted to be good at it because my parents are championship-winning dancers!

What's next for you?
Daniel: My next film is set in Australia. It's about four boys who have grown up in an orphanage in the outback. And then they get some money and send the boys to the sea for a couple of weeks. It took five and a half weeks and there was no blue screen!

Rupert, Emma and Dan

Emma: One of the things that made me want to get into acting was being on a stage in front of a live audience, so I might try something in the theatre next.

One of the amazing that has come out of all this is the all the options I have from now. I'm reading away and trying to find something I fall in love with. I'd like to do something quite different and a bit smaller.

What do you think about Goblet being a 12A?
Emma: The audience who were the first fans of Harry Potter have grown up with the films. We may have lost some of the much younger audience, but I'm in it and I was scared!

This book is much more of a thriller than it has ever been before. The films have always been about being faithful to the books and we cannot avoid the fact that someone dies in it. They have made something that is true to the book.

How did you get on with the cast?
Mike: I didn't want them to think of me as an authority figure. They had grown

Harry Potter fans stood for hours in the driving rain on Sunday to catch a glimpse of the stars at the Goblet of Fire world premiere in London.
The stars, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, spent ages meeting fans and signing autographs.

Harry actor Daniel said: "It doesn't get any less bizarre. I seem to be coping ever so slightly better this year but it's marginal."

Sadly JK Rowling couldn't make the premiere as her husband is ill.

Daniel Radcliffe also told CBBC Newsround that he was starting work on a new film project in December - a movie called December Boys, which he said he was "incredibly excited" about.

Rupert Grint told us what he thought of the crazy premiere: "It's quite hard to get used to they are quite strange but they're fun as well," he said. "In a weird way it is quite strange, even getting recognised is quite weird, but everyone's always really nice."

And Emma Watson added: "I think there's a huge number of people here which is amazing. They just get bigger and bigger every year.

"This is the world premiere and it's big and brilliant and fantastic."

Most of the new cast members were there too, including Katie Leung, who plays Harry's love interest Cho Chang in this movie. She was joined by Clemence Poesy, who plays Fleur Delacour, Stanislav Ianevski, who plays Viktor Krum, and Robert Pattinson, who is Cedric Diggory.

The adult stars were out in force too, such as Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Professor McGonagall, Robbie Coltrane who's Hagrid, Timothy Spall, who is the evil Peter Pettigrew, and new Doctor Who actor David Tennant, who portrays Barty Crouch Junior in Goblet.

And the crowd went wild when the surprise guest star of the night turned up - Madonna with her daughter Lourdes, who's a big Harry Potter fan.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is released in the UK on 18 November and has been given a 12A rating.

How different do James and Oliver Phelps look with brown hair?? They have to dye their hair ginger for filming but this is their natural colour. It's the first time they've had brown hair in five years!

World premiere for Potter movie

The Goblet of Fire is the fourth Harry Potter film
The stars of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire have attended the film's world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London.
Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, thanked all the fans who had turned up. "If this doesn't get you exhilarated, nothing else will," he told the BBC.

Emma Watson, who plays Hermione, said the atmosphere was "amazing and completely overwhelming".

The Goblet of Fire is the fourth Potter book to be made into a film.

Some Potter fans had waited patiently outside the West End cinema since Saturday night.

"There were about 100 people when we got here at 9pm last night and there has been a lot of pushing to get to the front," Romina Talamonti from Argentina told the BBC News website.

Some Harry Potter fans camped out overnight for the premiere

"We didn't get any sleep at all but I think it will be worth it," she added.

Rupert Grint - who plays Harry and Hermione's friend Ron - also attended the premiere.

He told the BBC he had enjoyed making all the Potter films: "It's five years now and it's been a long time but they're good fun."

Filming on the fifth Potter movie gets under way in February.

Grint added that he would "definitely" like to be part of the sixth and seventh films.

New characters

The cast of the new film includes Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon and Dame Maggie Smith.

The film has been rated 12A, meaning children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, due to what classifiers called "more intense scenes".

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) decided the film contained "moderate fantasy violence, threat and horror".

The cast of the new film includes Ralph Fiennes and Michael Gambon

The film sees the boy wizard, played by Radcliffe, mysteriously selected to compete in the prestigious Triwizard Tournament against older students from Hogwarts and two rival schools from Europe.

Fiennes plays Harry's nemesis Lord Voldemort, while Miranda Richardson appears as gossip columnist Rita Skeeter.

The film also sees Harry get his first love interest in the form of fellow pupil Cho Chang.

Emma Watson returns as apprentice witch Hermione Granger while Rupert Grint is back as Ron Weasley.

At 157 minutes Goblet of Fire is the second longest Potter film, three minutes shorter than Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The film, released in the UK on 18 November, has been given a PG-13 rating in the US, signifying it may be inappropriate for pre-teens but it does not restrict children under 13 from admittance.

The fifth film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is due out in 2007.

"London GOF World Premiere
Wow! It was absolutely brilliant. I met almost all of the cast who attended. I also caught some footage, snapped some photos, and interviewed Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, James and Oliver Phelps, Devon Murray, Tom Felton, Robert Pattinson, Mike Newell, Katie Leung, and quite a few more.

Expect a report, pics, footage of the red carpet, fan interviews, and a review of the film (which was excellent) in a couple of days!

I can't thank Emerson enough for allowing me this incredible opportunity to represent MuggleNet at the World Premiere! "
