tomorrow 15-10-2003 03:26

what I would like tomorrow's conversation to be:

HH: So, you graduated in 2000.
Me: That's what the paper says, you moron.
HH: What kind of position are you looking for?
Me: If you read your email, you'd see that I applied for Financial Analyst.
HH: Are you currently working?
Me: First of all try to at least pretend that you know how to read and second we covered that yesterday.
HH: Great, can you please tell me about your experience.
Me: By now I've realized that you're either blind, illiterate or a complete moron. Perhaps all three. So, I'll just sit and paraphrase my resume for you for the next half hour.
We then proceed to talk about my resume and the recent Columbus Day sale at Lord & Taylor.
HH: I'd like to thank you for coming and successfully wasting a few hours of both of our time. We don't really have any positions we can offer you and this meeting was just to show my boss that I actually do real work. For some reason he thinks I spend most of my time in Lord & Taylor. Oh, shit he's coming this way. (shaking my hand). Once again thanks for coming on such short notice and I'll let you know as soon as something opens up.
Me: I was right, you're all of the above and then some. I won't be holding my breath waiting for your call.

Conversations 15-10-2003 03:16

Had two interesting conversations today. One with a headhunter and one with my Russian professor from back when. The first one (although chronologically it was second) lasted about 5 minutes and went like this:

Me: Hello, I'm returning your call.
HH: We got your resume from hotjobs, are you still looking for a job?
Me-thinking: I sent it to you yesterday, what do you think?
Me-talking: Yes, I am.
HH: Are you currently working?
Me-thinking: Did you even read the damn thing beyond my name and phone number?
Me-talking: No, I'm not.

Then she gave me the address and we agreed on 1pm meeting tomorrow. I hate having to pretend that the person I'm talking to is not stupid and actually asking reasonable questions.

Spain 13-10-2003 20:43

Recently came back from Spain. Wasn't too impressed. So many ppl told me how beautiful and awesome Spain is and how much they loved it. But I felt that it was just a smaller replica of Vienna and Paris (depending on who designed a particular area - Hapsburgs or Bourbons). Granted we only visited Madrid, Toledo and Barcelona. I guess next time we should venture into more authentic Spanish territory, like Seville or Grenada.

Out of the three Madrid was my favorite. Toledo was too boring and Barcelona too dirty. Madrid is a very pretty and lively city. Great nightlive and restaurant scene, very clean and good shopping. Toledo is very small (I think it stopped developing as a city, as soon as the capital was moved to Madrid) and every house and cathedral look the same. If not for El Greco collection, would have been a complete waste of time. Barcelona has not been "touched" since the Olympics. There was garbage on the streets in the historical center and tons of graffiti everywhere, plus it seemed as there were sewage problems the whole 3 days we were there. And that's the reaction of someone from NY.

Feel very responsible for Yul'ka feeling abondoned 13-10-2003 20:24

Feel very responsible for Yul'ka feeling abondoned by her old friends. Didn't mean to. Has been busy/depressed lately and didn't want to pass that on to others. Looking for a job for 6 months will do that to you. Feel pretty rejected and unwanted at the moment.

After reading about Yul'ka's troubles with her thesis, decided that it's not as bad as looking for a job. This decision resulted in a schedule meeting with my old Russian professor tomorrow. Mishka thinks I should use all the energy that is now channeled into whinning and moping around apartment for doing a Ph.D. in Russian lit. I was always much better at bullshitting on any given topic than doing actual work. Most of my Russian professors actually thought I was pretty good. Unlike my Economics professors... How did I end up in Finance anyway?

So what have I been doing with all my free time 13-10-2003 20:17

So what have I been doing with all my free time lately (the same time previously dedicated to reading strangers' journals on livenet)? Learning to drive. Actually have a road test in a week. Will probably fail, my instructor says my driving is pretty random - inogda poluchaetsya, inogda ne ochen.

I'm back... 13-10-2003 20:12

After being MIA for almost two months, I decided it's time to pick this journal off the ground and give it another chance.

Originally, stupidly thought that this can be one place where I can have a "real" diary, so to speak. I somehow forgot how much my husband likes to "spy" on me and to snoop around the web for my postings. I guess I should stop using the same nick everywhere.

according to the test, my personality is most similar to Samantha from "Sex and the City." But I always felt like Miranda. May be I secretly always wanted to be Samantha and that influenced my answers?

"Take yourself on a mental adventure today, dear Scorpio, in which you explore new realms of your world. Engage in discussions about philosophy and religion. Get to the core of a matter that seriously interests you. Now is a good time to consider taking classes or engaging in some form of higher learning. interesting books 25-08-2003 23:33

Recently finished a very interesting book, "Russian Debutante's Handbook." Actually met with the author and had my copy signed. It's basically about the identity crisis of "typical American young adults" who have been born in former sovok and brought to the States by their parents in preteen and teen years. Most of us finished very prestigious colleges and universities and have acquired quite respectable careers. However, we we don't feel either American or Russian or any other one-word nationality. This was sort of a topic of my college thesis, which I never quite finished.

Anyway the book has some plot ideas that are a bit "out there," but the characters are very true to life. I also thought the language of the work was great. I heard it's currently being translated into 7 languages, Russian being one of them.

house arrest 25-08-2003 22:43

i'm just another victim of self-inflicted house arrest. but despite the absolutely perfect summer weather on the other side of my window, i completely agree that "fresh" air is totally overrated. openning all the windows will essencially give the same effect.
