CAT’S CRADLE, 3″, Dark

I adore this block. Cat’s Cradle is the name given to this block by the Kansas City Star in 1934. I was also aware that it is called Wandering Lover (Hearth and Home, 1895); but my research revealed a long list of alternative names: Double Pyramids, Dove at the Window, Flying Birds and Hourglass (both Nancy Page). There are also a number of names related to William Henry Harrison, the ninth president of the United States: The Harrison Quilt, simply Harrison (Dakota Farmer, 1929) and Harrison Rose (Rural New Yorker, 1930).

The block is usually depicted with yellow patches in the middle of the triangles:

Forward and Back was first published by Nancy Cabot in the Chicago Tribune in 1937; she also gave two alternative names for the block, Perpetual Motion and Tree Everlasting, in the same article.

This is one of Nancy Page’s blocks. Barbara Brackman didn’t give a date for it, so we only know that it was published in one of her columns in the late 1920s – ’40s.

Many of the women who published syndicated quilt block columns used aliases. Did you know that Nancy Page’s real name was Florence LaGanke Harris, and that she was a teacher who authored dozens of cookbooks and household management textbooks in the 1940s?

Union is the name given to today’s block by the Ladies Art Company (#120, c. 1895). Other slight deviations to this name were Union Block (Nancy Cabot) and Union Square (Carrie Hall, 1935).

You may also know it by An Effective Square (Ladies’ Home Journal, 1899) or Four Crowns (Kansas City Star, 1933).

Узоры выполняемые по сетке восьмиконечных звезд

Сделайте чертеж основной сетки восьмиконечных звезд (рис.2-1). Для этого на основной квадрат блока узора нанесите диагонали и линии, соединяющие середины противолежащих сторон квадрата. Шагом циркуля, равным расстоянию от угла квадрата до его центра, сделайте засечки из каждого угла на прилежащих к нему сторонах квадрата. Соедините полученные восемь точек между собой.

Собирают восьмиконечные звезды и сходные узоры по тем же технологиям, что и другие сложные мозаичные узоры.

Для примера рассмотрим последовательность сборки узора «Восьмилу-чевая звезда» (рис.2-II). Узор этот состоит из четырех одинаковых сегментов, соединенных по радиальному способу сборки. Пронумеруйте детали внутри одного сегмента. Сделайте шаблоны на детали узора, отличающиеся друг от друга, и выкройте нужное количество лоскутных деталей.

Последовательность сборки узора «Восъмилучевая звезда»

• Сшейте лучи звезды, сострочив детали 1 - 2, а также 3-4: 
  1+2 ; 3+4
• Пристрочите один луч к угловому квадрату 5: 
  (1+2)+5
• Пристрочите к заготовке второй луч сегмента, пользуясь технологией преодоления тупого угла: 
  [(1+2)+5]+(3+4)т.у.
• Достройте сегмент, пристрочив к заготовке треугольник 6: 
  [(1+2)+5]+(3+4)т.у.+б
• Соедините по два сегмента в половинки узора, применяя технологию преодоления тупого угла: 
  {[(1 +2)+5]+(3+4)т.у.+6}х2 (т.у.)
• Соедините половинки узора единым швом, дважды преодолевая тупой угол: 
  /{[(1+2)+5]+(3+4)т.у.+6}х2 (т.у.)/х2 (т.у.)

На каждом этапе сборки узора следите за точностью стыковки деталей, пользуясь необходимой технологией. Готовое лоскутное полотно отпарьте и выровняйте.
